yeah, i had a d510, terrible computer, great warranty program. it was good, but i had more problems with it than i probably should have, so i would definitely recommend getting a warranty through dell, they took care of everything when it was covered.

I've either had or worked extensively on just about every model of the Dell lat. Which one are you referring to?

Any of them. Dont know much about them and wanted to get more info on it. I currently have a Dell Inspirion and want to change my computer. I saw the new Dell Latitude and they look pretty nice. I wanted to know how reliablity and performance are. The only problem with my Dell is the material they use seem cheap.

i had the motherboard replaced 3 times, all because where the charger plugs into the computer, there's a pin in the center of the hole, and that pin constantly kept bending up. then i had a problem where the dell tech (and this isn't much to do with computer reliability) forgot to put the speakers back into my computer after removing them to fix another problem. they did send me a new hard drive, no questions asked when the computer crashed about a year and a half after owning it. the best thing they did was when my computer started having overheating problems, and with about 3 weeks left under warranty, they sent me a brand new computer, even upgrading me to a d520. the d520 had worked great, (important because i didn't renew the warranty) up until i dropped it. overall, i thought it was a diecent computer for the long haul, so long as you have the warranty from dell.

Quite a common problem actually and a bad design at that. The Latitude CP chassis were notorious for this feature.

In general: the Latitude models were developed as their business line of notebooks. They are the little bit more expensive, tried and true, and not cutting edge for gaming. Very solid systems. A few quirks here and there, but pretty solid systems. Will this be a new box? or a used box for doing whatever wherever?

yeah, it drove me crazy, i would barely set the computer down and the pin would snap loose.

I did my time at Dell years ago. That was when they had the M90, IIRC. Since then, I've worked in the IT/Sysadmin/Netadmin world where I've dealt with Dells and HPs. Each have their advantages/disadvantages.

I like the Inspiron's and the Studio 17's. The XPS is just to expensive for a laptop. I just bought another Inspiron last week, my previous laptop lasted me 6 years and is still running strong even though it only has a 40 gb harddrive. I guess it doesn't hurt that I work in the IT world.

My Inspiron is overheating as I write this...it has run warm for a few months but now gets
HOT. It's about 3years old, so I thought it should have lasted longer. I would look at others
besides Dell if I was you.

They can get hot, blazing hot! One of the fans might be out and then it is either an easy replacement of the fan, or a board replacement due to the controller on the board.
