Im looking to purchase a new camcorder soon, I make lots of videos on YouTube and stuff and am starting to do videos for dealerships and I need a better quality camera. I would like to stick with Sony, Im guessing an HD Cam. would be the best choice. Here is the list sony has of all the HD Cameras http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=3556 excluding the HDR-FX1 (too big) the HDR-SR12 looks like the nicest camcorder? Has anyone had any experience with these cameras? Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated :)

    Thanks,
    Brian

    Brian,

    Here is my experience.

I purhcased a Sony Camcorder which uses a tape in digital format (Mini-DV).
My buddy purchased a Sony with a Hard Drive.

We went to vacation in San Diego.

    Just realised the problem.
I could easily change tapes after recording about 2 hours of video. (tape full = change tape).

My friend has to boot up his laptop, transfer the files from the HD of the Camcorder via USB to a folder on his Laptop.
Then empty the camcorder. Then record again. Took about 20-30 minutes to boot up laptop and transfer files and then clear image from camcorder.

For me, it was a quick 2 minute tape swap.

If you are going to get a camera with a Hard Drive (Make sure you can get one with a large Hard Drive least 2-3 hours of video recording time).

    Just my frendly advise.....

    Thanks,
    UZY

Thanks for the advice :) If you run out of memory on the HDR-SR12, you can simply put in a memory stick and it will record to that...plus it has a 120GB Hard Drive. 120GB is atleast a couple hours...right? :D

I never understood why someone would use a hard drive in a camcorder. It is a recipe for disaster sooner or later.

I think the days for camcorders are numbered. HD video is starting to appear on DSLR's. 12-18 months from now, it will be relatively common. Imagine the possibilities using different lenses and playing with depth of field.

Does anyone have any video footage or photos shot with a HDR-SR12 or any other Sony HD camera? Curious because supposedly the camcorder also shoots 10.2 megapixel photos.

    Thanks in Advance!
