Relief - locksmith able to fix the problem with my recalcitrant gas cap in locked mode. I am back in business!

 

Was the issue corrosion-related?

 

graphite-best lock lube on the planet. doesn't dry out and become gumma like the sprays will. can be messy if your not careful though...

 

Not corrosion. Just wear on one of the brass parts. Easily fixed. I will use graphite to keep it working smoothly

Do not EVER use "Graphite" on your 288 GTO's locking gas cap under any circumstances.

Heres why.

Firstly, Graphite is not an easy substance to control, and rest assured you do not want to breathe it in, for the sake of your good health. There is a good chance of this happening as you try to utilize the substance.

Secondly, it will absorb some moisture and depending on where your car is stored or if it ever gets washed or gets caught out in the rain, the effects of the moisture will be be to completely terminate the use of your gas cap locks. The reason this will occur is that the moisture or water will cause the material to cake and gum up in the lock, packing it in tight upon expansion and seizing the lock completely. What happens is that the hardening sludge will cause the mechanism to stick solid. The gas-cap lock is obviously a precision mechanism with limited tolerances and, well, you get the picture... I know this from the many ratty Lamborghini locks I have chosen to torture my life with.

Thirdly, Graphite is quite a messy substance and therefore a royal pain in the rear. If whilst you are filling the car up, should a little gasoline seep into the lock in which you have deposited Graphite, a black sludge will be released - perhaps into the nozzle of your fuel tank, or worse still, into it! Your $750,000 motorcar will not be impressed, or worse.

Look, Graphite might be fine for that old sloppy lock that leads to the tool shed in the back yard.... thats all I use it for. God help me if I don't prune my wife's Roses....

I have found that the best thing for precision locks is good old gun oil (also used for precision instruments). Some recommend a light machine oil, and quite frankly the location of the device should preclude any chance of grit or dust making any of these oils a problem. Then again if you drive on dusty roads like Steve Hill then all bets are off I have also seen that Teflon-based lubricants are highly touted.

Again, as I have suggested in an earlier post, if the unit is malfunctioning, and cleaning & lubricating does not restore it to easy operation, maybe its time for the 24-year-old unit to be rebuilt by a competent locksmith as it seems you have done. Locks have a tendency to wear out as you've already noted....

But whatever you do, keep Graphite well away from your GTO!

What a google cartoon.
Use whatever the locksmith that is rebuilding it suggests and stay with that product. Mixing products will be the biggest mistake.

 

Thanks all for the advice - fchat is fantastic. Locksmith said common oil is product to be used. Best solution will be to use the car more now that typhoon season is drawing to a close and remove the gas cap more regularly to refill the car! Again I must say that the GTO has not lost an iota of love since I got my Scuderia. Not an iota

I have no idea on Serial number but the owner is one of SA's richest and is on Forbes and is chairman of Richmont the swiss luxury good's co.
His car collection is impressive and the setting is amazing...here are his Fcars and the GTO

the only problem with those lovely ladies, it that the owner hardly ever uses them...or any other of his cars. It seem they are very well maintained by a dedicated team, who start and move them about weekly, but nothing too exciting other than that...its really sad to me.
We have a very active ferrai club here in SA with a 250 SWB often seen screemign about the track...but i am not too sure if it is 100% legit. Check out a local meet below...one one of the few rainy days we get in Jo'burg

Yes it is an official museum...all cars owned by one man and the museum is on his wine estate. It is about USD equiv $5 to go in and view the cars...he has DTM Mercs...and a carerra GT then some american olides...Auburn, Cord, Old Aston Martin, go check the link posted earlier.

It seems the local trend is that cars are finding their way back to SA after years being out the country.
Even more interesting would be to trace the exidos of f-cars from Zimbabwe, our neighbour to the north.
Our family friend had a 166, 250gte, 304 GTB/4, 512BB, 2 Daytona's, 246 and I remember him not beign the biggest collector...not bad for a tiny country in hell
