This is off topic but is more Florida related than the main OT forum. I was having a discussion with a friend and was wondering how much a "typical" Publix brings in on a Saturday? Gross sales of $50K, $100K, more? And how many customer walk thru the doors? Anyone here know?
im not quite sure store by store how much they bring in but Publix has a virtual monopoly of the Florida grocery market . I read somewhere that they have over 75% market share and outnumber the next closest competitor (winn-dixie) in # of stores 3-1 .
I recall a friend that used to be a manager at a local Publix saying that his store did about $700k per week on average. This was about 15 years ago, with a smaller than average (for today's market) store in a prime area. I would guess that Saturday is probably about double the average weekday, so maybe $200k per Saturday. If each store serves about 15,000 people, and there are about 3 people per household on average, then a 75% market share would serve 3,750 households. An average 3 person household would probably spend about $150 per week, so $560k per week would be average in gross sales. According to a web source, as of 1989 publix averaged about $300k per week per store. BT
They are about to remodel an old Albertson's here into a Publix and it is less than a mile to an existing store. They plan on keeping them both.
i work for pubilx....and it really depends on the store. Im at the 5th ave shops on us1 and i think we are close to 140k on a Saturday on a good day. but other days are super slow. the bigger stores like Hillsboro and Polo Club are most likely clearing a million a week.
Publix is taking over all of the supermarkets in Sarasota & Bradenton. They have he corner on the market. Then they will double their prices to pace for all of the take overs. The consumer will pay for all of it.
Will make special trips to the store in JensenBch[and Jupiter the new one near the Cards stadium] when visiting the kids this T-giving.Already looking forward to it. They have acoupla stores in SC and the ads show up on the SC tv's we catch...wish they'd open some in NC.If you're up here drivin around in the mountains try Ingles,they're ok but no Publix. cheers, RE
Locally Publix is our choice although we get all of our meat from Fresh Market and we shop for a lot at SuperTarget. Ingles is OK, the folks in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast have it made with Wegman's though.

I was talking to the Publix CFO in Lakeland last week and as it turns out, things are not as rosey as one may think for them lately. They have been faced with fierce competition from both WalMart and Target Superstores. With the exit of Winn Dixie and the acquisition of the Albertson's locations, the grocery space is still somewhat crowded with many families heading to these discount retailers. She stated that there is still a strong base of Publix customers that would never shop anywhere else, but those that live geographically close or those in the lower income bracket's are now heading to the superstores in search of cheaper pricing. The superstore concept isn't really new at all. Those that have lived here for many years as I have may remember that K-Mart had retail on one side and grocery on the other back in the 60's and 70's. They abandoned the concept in the late 70's right around the time that Publix was really establishing their footprint here in South Florida. There is no question that Publix does well and probably will continue to do so, but they are looking at alternative strategies to overcome the onset of giants like WalMart and Target.
I'll have to ask her, I know she's said they've had some big weekends recently; go figure... I'm still trying to understand just what the heck everyone does with all that bread and milk. ...must be that French Toast is popular during a hurricane. Same damn thing used to happen when I lived in NC - just hint that it might snow, and the whole region freaks out - schools close, buses stop running, and you can't find a loaf of bread or gallon of milk within a hundred miles.
well...that shows you the state of the economy best, no? Regular families have to tighten their belt when things fall on hard times. Have to buy Milk at Walmart for 5cents less than at Publix. Thank God George W. McCain knowns that the economy is strong.
When I was in high school Publix used to be closed on Sundays. The Blue Laws have been replaced with the Green Law$.
I love Publix and I see why they have an monopoly on the FL supermarkets. The stores are clean, have the best produce, and a great organic section (Greenwise), staff is friendly and always willing to help. My gf and I live right next to Super Wal-Mart and drive 3 miles down the road just to shop at Publix. I will pay more at Publix for the same product than cheaper at Wal-Mart just on pure principle. Wal-Mart treats their employees like crap, and you can tell because they are mostly rude, encourages their employees to get on WIC because they don't want to pay for benefits, and never have enough checkout aisles open.
