Hey everyone, I just got a speeding ticket in Huntingdon, PA doing 35 in a 25 (he clocked me at 46.4 but reduced it to 35).

According to the officer this is the lowest speeding ticket that is issued in PA. Now according to state law it is a charge of 2 points on your license (I believe that is to people whose license is registered in PA)

I am however, a Maryland resident with a registered MD driver's license. Will points be asessed in this situation or does being an out of state driver mean no points?

Also, will this taint my clean driving record in the state of MD or PA if I pay the fine. All advice is more than welcome everyone.

Finally, should I plead guilty and appear for court and hope for the best or what?

    Thanks again everyone.

I can tell you as a matter of course, that in Philadelphia and a couple of surrounding counties, merely pleading not guilty and going to the court date will usually result in some sort of reduction in points (but not necessarily a reduction in fines and costs). Usually the prosecutor or DA representative just wants to move the list along as fast as possible. Of course, for all I know Huntingdon County could be the exact opposite.

I plan on calling the local court house and finding out the exact information. My primary concern is the points and my own driving record because I cannot afford the insurance increase if I were to get any points.

Is it possible to plead guilty but do so in the court instead of just paying the fine and pleading guilty?

Keep the advice coming and thanks for the quick reply!

You can always plead not guilty, go to court and change your plea...hopefully after you have been offered a better deal! To be honest, the court is not likely to be too helpful over the phone because the last thing they want is to encourage someone to be another case on their docket. If the points are really important, hire some local attorney to go to court and fight it for you. In some of these towns, the courts see the same attorneys day in and out and are very "friendly" with them.

Both Maryland and PA are members of the Non-resident violator's compact and the Interstate Driver's License Compact, so it would appear that they would share information regarding the traffic ticket . However, how Maryland actually treats the information is something you would need to discuss with the Maryland DMV or a local attorney.

Go get your speedo calibrated. It's probably off at least 2-3mph. Plead not quilty due to faulty equipment and ask for the charges to be reduced. Has worked for me in the past.

I had to get my speedo calibrated for my reckless driving that I got in VA two years ago (turns out my speedo actually read HIGHER (oops). Not spending the money for it.

I think if it turns in to that big of a deal I'll find a local attorney.

Sam, PA can't assess points on your MD license. If it were me, pay the fine and be done with it. If your MD driver's license is ran the PA ticket may show up, depending on the agreement between states DMV's. For instance, if I run a MD license and you got a ticket in VA, it shows up. However if you have a MD license and you got a ticket in WVa,it won't show up....

Points are most people's biggest concern and states do not transfer or assess points from other states... Every states point system is different

Alright, so I won't get points on my license, but this ticket will show up on my record if I get pulled over again, and being that there are no points associated with it, my insurance should not go up?

If I truly can't get points that I may just show up to court and plead guilty and hope for reduced fines (being a college student I'm as cheap as can be!)

Again, I don't know what Maryland will do with the ticket and maybe 285Ferrari has personal experience or first hand knowledge that would dictate otherwise. However, as I said earlier, Both Maryland and PA are members of the Non-resident violator's compact and the Interstate Driver's License Compact--which generally doesn't bode well for you. I can name a bunch of states where a violation would result in points in PA (ask me how I know), but I don't know vice versa and I don't know Maryland. A couple of quick phone calls should get you your answer on that one.
