points deductions?

All 246 USA export models ('72-'74) had the side marker lights as required by DOT regulations. The ones you see without, if they're actual USA models, have been "skinned" over.

I suppose that it could be a points deduction for non-originality, but it's hard to say.

 

Yup, it'll cost you points. Might be one, could be two depending on the judge I suppose. I don't have the FCA score sheet at hand, so I can't tell you exactly what it'll cost you.

Removing original stuff from the car is the same as adding non-original stuff I think.

I lost points at a concours because a judge felt my side markers didn't fit properly, and were, therefore, non original. There was no talking him out of it.

The last judge's seminar I attended, this kind of stuff was discussed at length for a regional FCA event, so if you get a judge who knows the cars, or if another one is nearby, then it's bound to come up.

Not a problem any more Dave. Since I bought your car I have replaced the side markers with purple neons and the headlights with Jimmy540's HID-look-a-likes.

LOL, different point deduction depending on the judge. Can't this stuff be standardized?!!! Just decide what it should be, vote on it if necessary, record it, and submit it to all members well in advance of the concours season.

Again, Laughing F'n Out Loud. Not at you Dave, but at the stupid system. A judge FELT they didn't fit properly? How about determining if the parts in question are original or not and then deduct points if necessary as called out in the judging rules?

As a member of FCA I'm thinking of getting more involved in the concours judging because from where I sit it appears to be just a cluster ****, making stuff up on the spot. What am I missing?

I don't know about the national level. I've always assumed that the national concours had judges suited for each type of car with a good knowledge of the vehicles.

At the last FCA event I went to, I was a judge in the modern v12 class. fortunately I had another judge working with me who knew the cars better than I did. I could certainly tell real from fake on things like SF shields, but some of the stuff was well past my (at the time) knowledge of those particular cars.

I had assumed (since I no longer owned my Dino) that I might help out in that class, but alas, that was not to be so. After all, why use my knowledge of a particular model to help with judging.

I'm gonna bone up on 550, 575 so that I can help judge the early v-12's next year.

There is a standardized score sheet, but it still leaves up to interpretation (at least as far as I can tell) the level of deduction for some transgressions.

Shows how much he knew, The mere fact that they didn't fit properly was a sure sign that they WERE original!

 

A point that I actually tried to make with him. Explained that they were Alfa markers adapted to the Dino to meet US specs and therefore fit only so well. He didn't buy it. Interestingly, the guy services Ferraris.

One thing to consider when discussing the side markers...Prior to early model 1972 (manufactured late 1971), there was no U.S. or Euro model Dino. They were all the same, with small-round front side marker lights, no rear side marker light, and flush front directionals. I owned 02832 (manufactured mid 1971) which I purchased in Connecticut in 1977, and imported by Chenetti, which had what is now referred to as the Euro configuration, but at the time was the only configuration. I also own 2900 and 3002, both manufactured shortly after 02832, and both with what is now referred to as the U.S. configuration.

If judges do not correlate chassis number with year, then your 1972 example configured as a "Euro" might, indeed, be correct.

If shown as a euro car, it better have red/yellow tail lights,appropriate guages, bumpers and no seat belt buzzer and and and (and lack USA smog gear too!)

No side markers does not constitute EURO automatically

An early euro car (dino/daytona 365GTC etc) that had to meet compliance is also OK similar to Boxer/400/288 DOT/EPA compliance judging guidelines

 

There is a printed listed of suggested deductions that should be handed out to at minimum the chief class judge at local FCA judged events.
The sheet was authored by Dyke Ridgley well over 10 years ago and is still utilized. SUGGESTED POINT DEDUCTIONS!!!
Most of the national judges are familiar with this, guess the trickled down effect does not always get to some regional events.
