I'm looking to unload my 06 M5, and there seems to be more Owners/Buyers here than anywhere! What are your thoughts on value and what is fair for a quick sale...

2006 Indianapolis Red M5, 29,xxx miles Black interior with aluminum trim. No HUD, No shades. New OEM tyres, overall great shape. Only fault would be a prior paint work on Driver's Door (tree limb fell next to car during storm, caught the door on the way down, great to wake up to, two weeks before I finished my garage!). Not a show car by any means, but definitely a great driver...

I know the market has taken a hit, and I'll be honest, I feel guilty filling up knowing I'm getting 14 mpg...

Your thoughts and recent experiences are GREATLY appreciated...

    Thanks in advance.

    -Neil

Stick shift and fully serviced I would wager $46,000 for sure and perhaps $50,000 if you can find a buyer that really wants it. M5's can be had anywhere so there won't be a flood of people looking for this car.

I'm finding that these cars are everywhere, nothing like the previous (early 2000's M5) cars...I have been trying to get $50k for quite a while, with really no lookers. It feels like the market is flooded...Anyone tried to trade one in? How did that go?

I just turned my leased 2006 M5 in and so glad I did. The e60 M5 is the worse M5 ever. I had previously owned an e34 and e39 M5 which were both superior cars...especially the e34 M5. Anyway, the lease residual was $69k and the dealer tried to get me to buy it at $50k. It is my understanding that e60 M5s are currently going for low-mid the $40k at auction...

It'll sell. At least you're being realistic about it's value. Drop it a few more thousand and you'll find the sweet spot. I'm actually looking for one, but I have to take my arse kicking on the 06 H2 I bought last year.

    Good luck.

M5's are really neat cars and are great to drive. Problem is they are simply hideously expensive to repair.

Just take a look thru the tech section of Roundel and you will find that for almost any service they HAVE to go back to the dealer (and that includes things as trivial as oil changes). Add to that the very high price for spare parts (M5 specific parts are typically twice that of a non-M part, and the ONLY place you are going to find them is at a dealer) and you have to discount the car a lot to get someone to buy it. The car was expensive to start with, but with the word out on what it costs to maintain them, the price has dropped accordingly.

It is unfortunate that they depreciate the way they have, most folks would love to have one, but if you look at what it could cost you if something breaks, you have to figure that you better pay a lot less for it, just in case something does happen.

When BMW was writing leases with a residual at $69k they thought they were putting money in the bank. Now they are getting hosed with a loss of close to $20k per car..... Ouch!!!!

    I can't imagine a $69k residual!

I've got about 8 hours left and just lowered the price to $46,900 in hopes of enticing someone! I can't believe that's all the car is worth, but as they say, it's only worth what someone will pay!

Wow, just wow. It seems to me that you are playing with used car buyer psychology. My dad always told me, "Buy either a black or silver car. No exceptions." You're competing with the cheaper Silverstone one in San Diego, which admittedly has more miles, but that's the sticking point (color), I'd reckon.

In the mix is also the cobalt blue one with a price similar to yours. I guess the bottom line is whether someone would pay 47 large for a brick red car. A smart buyer will seek to get the car from you for 42. Speaking personally, I would buy a silver or black one for a bit more money, irrespective of miles (assuming the miles aren't outrageous). That's my take on used car psychology.

But, in any event, I've learned tons about the depreciation of cars. They are indeed a depreciating asset.
