I took your post as quite condescending...if I was wrong (and I *am* often wrong), and that was not your intent, then you have my apology. Alex
i love how gt-4 owners keep saying no one has told them their car is ugly. Do you really expect someone to tell you that? bet no one ever said your baby was ugly either. but behind your back.......
I have had several people tell me my car is ugly (gt4 #10704)! Also had a guy at a car show tell me it wasn't really a Ferrari. Still love it though...and it is not as ugly as my 400i. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi everybody! Who dares to say the Mondial is an ugly car? So classy! What an elegant sleeper in the Ferrari look standards! And of course, you have see one in real life to appreciate its exotic lines and volumes. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Three of the best 'modern' Ferraris. 400i 5-speed, 308 GT4, and the Mondlal 3.2 or T Coupe. All you other guys are just silly. Everything else is just overdone. (although, I do like the 348/355 pair...I like the earliness of the 348, but I prefer the non-strake looks). Of course, there are the other "bests" which are nearly unobtainable. F40, 288 GTO and did I mention the F40?
If we're talking about appearance I have to disagree about the f40. I think on an aesthetic basis it is an absolute failure. It has very little imagination and looks like some ricers took a ferrari and pop riveted metal panels and extreme spoilers front and rear. This is ok because I think the car was designed as race car and as such in my view aesthetic balance was sacrificed for aerodynamic considerations. Having said that....I'd love to drive one around a track.
Easy question. The Enzo. Ugly as sin and an auto tranny as well. It's the one Ferrari that makes me throw up in the back of my throat a wee bit. LOL.
I dont know when the real aero age came along, perhaps with the Chrysler Airflow? But aerodynamics can be used in two different ways with automobiles, first to reduce drag, and secondly to create downforce. Reducing drag gave us gorgeous cars throughout the 50's and 60's, the Jaguar C, D, and E types, various Ferrari's, and etc., whereas increases in downforce gave us cars like the F-40, Enzo and the SLR. I dont particularly like those later cars because they are really ugly, but once you go beyond thier looks and see thier capabilities you see thier real beauty. The Enzo may not be a pretty car, but once you read about it, understand what it can do, and watch one, you will be blown away. I would suggest anyone who doesnt know the car do a seach on Youtube of the FXX. It will BLOW you away.
Yes, Steve McQueen got stuck with a marrone Lusso as well -- maybe if his agent had negotiated a little harder... I have to disagree with your disagreement. I think the 328 is a "prettier" car, but the F40's form definitely follows its function -- gobs of power, steamroller tires -- while it pays homage to signature Pininfarina styling cues of that golden age of classic Ferraris: quad tail lights, air intakes on the upper flanks, five-spoke wheels. In contrast, the Enzo is a failed design because it isn't recognizably Ferrari. The F40 really melds the "pure track machine" and "stylish sports car" looks in a way that has never been done since. I would put it somewhere on my "Best Ferrari Ever" list.
Pretty gutsy statement. I think I'm one of the few who agrees with it completely. That said - I think the F40 is a phenomenal car & certainly nowhere near the "worst Ferrari ever made."
The F40 is one of my favourite cars. Period. Can't say I am a fan of the FXX any more than the Enzo for a lot of the same reasons. Ugly and capabilities that are more from the onboard electronics than input from the driver. Just my opinion of course but I feel these cars represent the beginning of the end of cars that made my heart race. They seem more supercars designed so the owner can balance his/her phone/blackberry as most cars are these days. I never thought I'd see a Ferrari that didn't make me want one but the F50 and Enzo were the beginning of that for me. Though I DO like the SLR. A lot.
Couldn't agree more. One of the things that first got me into Ferrari was the purpose built unfiltered nature of them. They weren't just about outright speed and capability but the ACT of driving. Pure sensory overload. I really don't care how fast the Enzo is, or any of the other new Ferrari supercars. I rather they lose all the gadgets and just be pure performance. Lets face it, if you are just looking for pure performance...get a Porsche. They are quick, reliable and about as pulse pounding as a toaster. For me, the last great Ferrari's were the 355, F40, & 575. I want to include the F50 but I have always been urked by the fact that Ferrari dialed the car back a bit to protect ignorant owners from wrapping them around trees. Just my .02. FWIW, I think that the Mondial 3.2 cab is one of the nicest looking Ferraris built in the last 30 years...much better in person than pictures. I think most of the mondial haters need to spend some seat time with them. They are exceptional.
I wonder if the reason so many Enzos get wrecked is the lack of skill required to drive them? IE: Anyone who can drive an autobox can drive it. I realize it takes some finesse not to wreck it as far as "keeping your boot out of it" but if the driver hasn't even the skill to handle a clutch, he/she may be less tempted to drive a car of that nature in the first place. I don't mean this out of sarcasm, I seriously was thinking earlier if there may be a relationship there. Mainly that one time, you actually had to know how to "DRIVE" in order to drive an exotic and now anyone with the wherewithal to afford it can. Anyways, getting off topic and I apologize. The Enzo to me is just boring. Fast yes, but boring. Point, shoot and hold on. LOL. maybe it's TOO easy and people forget it's driving and not a video game. Then again, what do I know? I personally believe that stability control in ALL cars should be banned rather than encouraged. I love the F40 as much as I hate the Enzo and for the same basic reasons only reversed. Then again, 20 years or so ago, I HATED the Countach (LOVED the BB512...mmmmmmm) yet now love the Countach. LOL. (STILL love the BB512.......) Nice to see so many different opinions on this question and so many different explanations why. A fun read. Thank you all who have added to it. Don't mind me, I'm just an opinionated old bugger. Den.
I was going to defend the Enzo, but what you wrote here takes some consideration. Formula One became boring to me for much of that reason. The cars are so fast, the engines sound like turbines, and all the things that made driving a challenge were taken away. The cars are so electronically and radio controlled today, it would not be difficult to drive them autonomously from the pits. And given the choice, I would rather hear a 308, 348, 355 than most any F1 car the last 10 or 15 years. Once they rev over 11K they sound more like model airplane engines than cars. I would add though, put a manual gearbox in the FXX and remove the TC, and it would still be an awesome machine.
What then of the California 2+? "Dog's breakfast" styling, mistress-proof transmission, and cupholders, ffs, in a "Ferrari"... A sure sign that the terrorists (ie marketing dept.) have won.
Strangely enough. I don't find the styling of the FXX as bad. Maybe it's been "tweaked" as a more purpose driven design? I don't know. But yes, Get rid of the electronics and add a real transmission and I'd have my curiosity nudged. LOL. Ironically, about F1. I used to cal it "Formula Dumb" as since Gillles died I rated it right alongside NASCAR. The irony is lately I've discovered Racing (PC) sims and a member got me to try an F1 simulation and I was shocked to find I enjoyed it! I didn't expect to but there it is. Heh. But yeah, my pick of "worse Ferrari" is the Enzo. Not just the car itself, though it is in my mind but also what it represents to ME which is "the beginning of the end" as I would say ANY Ferrari with the F1 tranny is on my list but I guess that would be "worse accessory/option" or something. LOL. Den.
I hear these models being picked as the "worst" before as well. The 400i with a 5spd is hilarious and pretty quick (for a big car). They also sound nice with an open exhaust system. The 348's issues are all ancient history aren't they? Who still hasn't done a track alignment, replaced the Delco alternator or ECUs? When they are sorted, especially the Motronic 2.7 cars, they are pretty awesome. LS
No, sorry dude, the 308 GT4 is simply the ugliest car ever MADE! (Just kidding! Honestly, I like both the 400i and the GT4. I don't think either one is "ugly" in the least. Maybe I'm strange.) Your car looks absolutely awesome to me.
