What should I ask from an AD when I can't have a PPI on a used Fcar? Should I walk? If this was discussed before please show me the way to the right thread. I used the search engine and didn't find a "rational" answer but a lot of flame and vapor... TIA to all.
You might post all the pertinent details here as an alert. There might be someone here familiar with the car.
Depends on the car, post a link to the ad. However, if it's a modern Ferrari, (any 3 series or modern 12) and doesn't include some form of factory or dealer warranty, I'd pass, as there are lots of cars available right now. (If this is some kind of one off, or a $14MM 250GTO, then forget I said anything and pop the guy a CHECK right now!!) DM
It would appear that any restrictions on a PPI would send off alarms and make one question why and the quality of the seller. But before going into flame mode can you discerne if there is some rational reason or mitigating circumstances? Is the seller concerned that a potential buyer will want the seller to pay for the inspection (potential buyer should pay)? This could be a run fast situation but if the deal is sweet enough maybe it is worth digging deeper. If the seller has a questionable reputation (like a specific dealership here in St. Louis) then there is no doubt in running. Keep your bull sh*t detectors on high alert. Jeff
Get a 60 day dealer warranty, and have the PPI done right after you purchase. Anything that turns up in the PPI would be covered by the warranty. IF they don't want to warranty the car, then pass, there are other cars out there.
They say that a PPI is a no since they are the best in their trade and all that... So should a warranty like a 1 year on power train or something like that should be ok? Cosmetic you can see and evaluate if you think you're getting your moneys worth. Mechanic that is something else...
What he said. Overall, I would probably buy the car. An AD would likely take care of you even without a warranty if something went wrong right away unless it was due to your driving. (TR differentials can be weak, as you probably know, and that would be $25K out of your pocket...)
Francois, Ask Umberto at FoQ if he knows the car. Remember, the Ferrari circles in Quebec and Ontario are small and tight. If it's a car with stories, folks will know about it.
+1 You might want to also post all pertinent info in the Canadian section for the same reason... someone might know the car.
Is Ferrari of TO close enough to you to go look at the car in person? Would you be using them to perform the continuing maintenance? Do you have someone you will be using as a mechanic on the car that could join you in evaluating the car on-site at the dealership? It seems strange that an authorized dealership would have a real problem with someone else looking over the car on your behalf. Will the dealership perform and document a full PPI as if they were doing the evaluation for a third party? Does the dealership appear to be afraid of too many tire kickers? Maybe a significant refundable deposit changes their mind. Jeff
agreed, any dealer that tells me i cannot get a car inspected can go pound sand. 5 Ferrari's and 3 Lamborghini's, so i am no poseur or tire kicker. check with the local muscle on the car if its really what you want, but i would be very concerened about a dealer having that attitude with a customer, especially in this market. cash is king. good luck to you, i have been drooling over TR's for a few months.
I bought my car from a g.m. at a dealership thats very big and after a month or so after agreeing on a price providing on a ppi,he even allowed my machanic to the dealedships shop and use their lift and smog, after 5hrs,I bought the car, this is not the time for this guy to say no,but maybe he doesn't need to sell it either
There is only one reason for the policy and that is to hide the cars condition. It probably works for them because so many uninformed Kool Aid drinkers walk through the door. Do not buy with an understanding or a 60 day buy back or any of that garbage. Part of the purpose of a PPI is to give you ammo to negotiate a better price and all that will go out the window. Besides getting your money back in a few weeks will almost certainly be easier said that done. When they say there is no one around the area that knows them well enough to do a proper evaluation, well that is hubris carried to the extreme. What would they say if you planned to fly someone in? It is done all the time. I strongly suspect their answer would be the same. Walk.
I did have a reputable mechanic look over the car (fromFchat), had FoO do a leakdown/compression test for me, and we put some words in the contract about never being hit or something. My 348 spider is brilliant and definitely exceeded my expectations when it showed. They're also an FNA authorized dealer, one of 3 in Canada. So if we want to buy an Fcar, a lot of roads lead to FoO/FoT. I didn't like the no PPI policy either - but I wouldn't be quite so harsh on them as some of the posters. As some say, follow-up with the locals, like Rock, who has a very strong reputation in the Canadian section, and see what's really going on. There can't be that many TR's in Toronto to not find a few hundred people who know the car and it's history! Or not - and buy somewhere else
Are you kidding? The best in the business have nothing to hide and will bend over backwards to accommodate your PPI.
At the time we were hogtied in Canada. Couldn't import 348's per the government and FNA's successful negotiations at the time. As I recall, 8 348 spiders were for sale in Canada at the time. And came down to two that weren't being resold by 2nd/3rd tier body shops (subtle, I know), have serious mechanical woes, or other major stories. The FoO car was one of the two, was less $'s, less miles, a better colour combo, and from an FNA dealer. This TR is a different situation, and the OP has a lot more options. In my case it worked out great, and FoO was a positive experience despite the PPI issue. There's some interesting personalities in the Exotic Car business, that's for sure.
Really? You don't know what to do? It wouldn't be a more obvious scam if the car was in Nigeria, or Florida. "FIRST, I MUST SOLICIT YOUR STRICTEST CONFIDENCE IN THIS TRANSACTION. THIS IS BY VIRTUE OF ITS NATURE AS BEING UTTERLY CONFIDENTIAL AND 'TOP SECRET'. I AM SURE AND HAVE CONFIDENCE OF YOUR ABILITY AND RELIABILITY TO PROSECUTE A TRANSACTION OF THIS GREAT MAGNITUDE INVOLVING A PENDING TRANSACTION REQUIRING MAXIIMUM CONFIDENCE"...
Oh really? In all seriousness, It wouldnt surprise me if the car was good. Remo has good cars and I bet he is just very picky as to where the car goes and who touches it other than his guys. As mentionned here, someone will know the car. It's just a matter of digging and you will get a good idea if you should stay away or not. Give Rock, Tom or Brett a call and make a deal with one to go look the car over. I remember when TJacoby did this with Tom and now he's as happy as a school girl!
