I have what I think is a serious problem. I'm 16 a junior in Highschool and I do not know what I want to be when I grow up. I mean there has been countless times where I try to research possible careers for hours on end and really nothing comes to interest me at all. I took some dumb test to see what field I would fall under when I was freshman in highschool. When I got the results back in it could not fit me into a category. The result think was like a pie chart with a circle in the middle and I was in the middle. I guess if I wanted to do something that could achieve I would become a dentist or an orthodontist and open up a practice. I think its a good paying job. It is not hard on yourself and it dose not seem to be stressful at all. I would not mind going to college for 4 years, which I plan on, then dental school for 4 years and then what ever is after that 2 or 4 years. I mean its gravy after that. The only problem is I seem to believe that if you are smart everything will come to you college, career, successful life. Now your probably wondering if I'm smart. This is were it comes it play becoming an orthodontist or dentist. When it comes to school I work my freaking tail off. When I see people slaking off, not studying, and doing stuff at the last second and their result is making A's o boy does that make me mad as all get out. I mean I will study for an hour or more on every single test does not matter what the subject is. I usually do good, decent on my test usually mid to high B and sometime low A's. Man when I see people doing nothing in my pre-ap classes and get good grades I just do not know how they do it. I could go on and on about my grades and how smart im am. I mean it sucks I did not even get my Dad's smarts instead my sister gets them me and my little brother end up with my moms brains. Now my grade point last year was a 3.8 out 5 yea not great but it suits me. Just wondering if you guys can help me out with career choice or help with steps to becoming an orthodontist or dentist. Sorry about my rambling on about school and everything. Hope you guys find this thread amusing or fun.

It's been a little while since I was in high school but I seem to recall that 4.0 was the best possible? Is this like an amp that goes up to 11?

Dont be so hard on yourself.

Ill let the actual Dentists here comment on the best path for that career, but I will say that you should make sure you have PASSION for whatever it is you choose. Do NOT make money the priority in your choice or you will end up frustrated and unhappy.

I know several people in well paying professions such as doctor and lawyer that wish they would have pursued their DREAMS and not the rational choice.

Im not trying to talk you out of dentistry....just saying to give some deep thought to what you are passionate about and see if there is a career path in there so you can do what you love and make a good living.

Learning good english composition is a start, because your spelling and sentence structure is terrible.

Don't laugh or get upset, but this is what people first see, and first impressions are the most important.

NOBODY can tell you what to be when you grow up, only you can figure out where you want life to take you, THEN you have to start figuring out how to get there. Don't force yourself to do something you may not enjoy doing.

(PS - we are ALL still 'growing up' - until the day we die)

Mark - 4.0 is 'basic standard', but today they have 'honors' classes where you can get a 4.25.

PSS - Ross - you don't have a serious problem, you have a SMALL problem if you have not given any thought as to what you want to do, you just need to be thinking about it, not necessarily DECIDING on what is the one thing you want to do.
Some folks want to be a basic auto mechanic - nothing wrong with that - I know great guys that LOVE to drive, and they drive OTR semi trucks coast to coast, they LOVE it, and I know Doctors, Lawyers, Accountants, Carpenters, lawn service owners, concrete contractors, they all love what they do.

LOL I take no offense to your comment. English is my worst subject in school. I saw this coming the second I was writting this thread up. The reason I said I wanted to become a dentist or an orthodontist was because thats what I wanted to be my freshman and some of my sophomore year in higschool. The reason I stopped wanting to become a dentist or an ortho. was because my dad said I wasn't smart enough. I was put done by the big man. Two of my cousins are in dental school right now and there smart as hell. Sometimes I just think im too dumb to become one.

Worry about yourself and get yourself in a good university doing a program that you like and that will teach you work ethics and guide you towards what you want to do. There's no way you can know right now. I went into software engineering and now I'm doing architecture. Both very different disciplines, but engineering taught me to take life seriously and I'm glad I did it.

Personally I'm not much older than you and I would suggest you stop stressing about stuff. At 16 you must be in grade 10? Enjoy high school, I floated to grade 12 with a 70% average and then took my last year seriously and got an 89% average so really I think you're still young to be venting off like this.

Man that's some serious grade inflation. I haven't been out of high school THAT long, and our AP classes certainly weren't 6.0. I don't even think they were 5.0 but I could be wrong about that.

Either way, if you are making your career decision based on what your Dad told you, that is a bad idea. If he really told you that you weren't smart enough to be a dentist, but you think you've got what it takes, DO IT. In fact, do it just to prove him wrong. Nothing motivates me more than someone telling me I can't do something.

The fact that you're on here asking about it leads me to believe that you're already one step ahead of the game. Most people your age don't think about this stuff and wind up being in their late 20s with college debt up the ying yang for a useless degree that they aren't using.

Do what feels right, do what you want to do (despite what your dad says), and let life work itself out. Oh, and have some fun. Life goes fast.

Not alone. Don't stress about it.

See if you can't get a part time job, or a summer job working at a place that interests you.

    Good luck to you.
