There is no "best" place to go; my favorite place near where you will be (by the naval training station) is the Silo in Lake Bluff. It's REALLY down to earth; I'd not eat steak or seafood there, but the pizza is great and it's pretty darn cheap. It's about a mile or so away from Lake Forest Sportscars, on Route 176 just west of Waukegan Road.

I actually prefer the thin crust from Lou's. Either way, it's good.

Sorry, but their deep dish ends up like soup. Instead, I opt for Gino's East sausage/mushroom. And as good as it is hot, try the leftovers later on from the fridge.

Gino's used to be the bomb, something changed when they went back to private ownership. Still good, but diffrent than it was.
You have to have Lou's at the restaurant, its nice and crispy that way, it gets soggy when you do carry out.

Armands is good thin crust for sure. Aurelios and Barnabys are great for thin crust too.

I held back from any pizza recommendation (because I was worried it would just be moved to the P&R section)... but as a Navy veteran - my best to your son!
