Can anyone tell me the visual difference (if any) between a 365 and 512 Boxer?

I looked through the Boxer photo thread and just cant figure it out. Is it only the engine?

    Thanks,

    PDG

The most obvious visual differences are:

365-Smooth front end without integrated front air dam
    512-Integrated front air dam

365-No NACA duct in front of rear wheels
512-NACA duct in front of rear wheels

    365-Three tail lamps per side
    512-Two tail lamps per side

365-Exhaust pipes exit near outside of rear bumper (three pipes per side, if factory exhaust fitted)
512-Exhaust pipes exit near closer to the middle of the rear bumper (two pipes per side, if factory exhaust fitted)

The 512 rear body section, particularly when viewing the rear wheel well arches is slightly wider than the 365.

There are other minor visual differences, but these are the most obvious.

Wider wheels on 512, rear body work is 4" wider to fit the wheels and of course the 512 is....oh forget it.

To finish Newman's thought - - You can also tell an injected car, because it won't be on fire, generally speaking.

Or sitting on the side of the road with a blown diff or burnt single disc clutch lol. They made all those things better when they made the injected version and added more torque for better 0-60 times. :)

One of the more obvious differences between the epic 365bb and the more common, perhaps slower 512bbi is the owner demeanor. The BBi owners, particularly those residing “North of the Border”, have a tendency to highlight the perceived flaws in the 365 design, rather than focus on the more collectable, inherent desirability of a 365bb thoroughbred. While there may be some trivial mechanical enhancements to the BBi, the 365bb will always be the collector’s choice, as reliability has little to do with the ultimate driving experience.

I guess being up here in the cold I need all the comfort one can get so I chose the quicker, better engineered version because I enjoy driving a car knowing it wont break if I get on it. Yes the 365 is priced higher but isnt a better value nor is it anymore a ferrari than another boxer variation. Its only the low production number that drives that trend plus it only matters what its worth when you sell it, not as you flag down a taxi with gear oil streaming out from under the gearbox just after the alarming KABOOM that wiped the smile from your face.

    You win!
    I'm calling a cab....
It looks like I'll have to drive my "winter beater" BBi earlier in the season then I normally do.

After all that "rawness" your back and Mikes Knees could use a BBi or 512BB. I went out in my mine last night and thought about what you said of your seating position. Mine is angled pretty much like my 308 and doesnt cause me pain but then again im not old either lol.

BBi's will be found only at Concorso d'Eleganza's ( follow the men in top hats carrying picnic baskets ) or in a heated and air-conditioned garage. ( You may note the shape under the bubble wrap ). Or possibly in an enclosed trailer going from one to the other.

    Take that! ;)

This has been interesting to watch.

But seriously, thank you for teaching me the differences. I have wondered for years and just never really asked anyone for the distinctions although I knew there had to be some visual.

    Here is a visual distinction.
You race a late BBi against a Testarosa and you get blown away when you find out how much faster the Boxer really is.....I have tried it a long time ago when I had both.....I still have the Boxer and the 308 I used to own an 85 four valve was a nice car ,it handled great at speed and looked great.
My Boxer stock with after market rims and tires does five seconds flat 0-60 shifting normally with out any drama on a chronograph
Any body with a 365 care to give us some real figures it would be very interesting to know since I have never figured out why some claim they feel faster than the BBis

Maybe it was just that the carbs were out of adjustment, but when I test drove a 2365, two BB512s and two BB512is back when I was looking for a Boxer, I too found that the BB512i felt faster from the seat of the pants...

Regardless of what a particular 365 owner might say (you know who you are :)) the BBi is the quickest off the line, top end is less than the 365 and today with losing your license here in ontario if you go 50Kms over the limit, (and impound your car) I dont need the extra 15mph the 365 gives me of top end. The larger displacement combined with long intake runners gives the BBi the torque one uses on the street. As for sound, my 365 headers and 2 can ansa gives me plenty of noise.

What is the top end of the 365?
The BBi is a true 175mph car.

The prototype 365 in 71 reached 188mph with the 380HP engine (production car is 360hp at 7000rpm). The most the factory ever obtained from a road car was 181mph or 280kph.

But were all 4 wheels on the ground for the "official" top speed?
