No, and I have yet to hear of an engine that failed because someone switched from synthetic back to dino oil. Fear is a good marketing tool in some cases.

    +1,

I am NOT an oil expert but, I did hear or read that if you change either way (dino to syn or vise versa), you should run the engine with the new oil for about 250 miles or less and then change it again to "flush out" as much of the no longer desired oil as possible.

+1 on the "Fear Factor" also, I would think.

I think motor oil is motor oil, I mean look at Ferrari, they just made dealers switch from Shell Helix to Quaker State. I always thought Quaker State was crap.

I have been told by reps in the oil industry the it is a Federal requirement that synthetic and dino oils be completely compatible. I have seen them mixed, switched back and forth and every concievable combination and have seen no ill effects. Agip the oil Ferrari used for years is a blend.

Its a load. Said to sell oil. Period.

Very nice but the overhead Fastrack readers don't seem to work very well. You go under without slowing down and every time I do it in a strange car I get a letter wanting money. They must be sifting through a bunch of photos every day to see who has Fastrack and who doesn't.

Oh well, just taxpayers money. What else is new?

Complete crap in my opinion. What does he make of the synthetic blend oils? They are part synthetic and part petroleum based...put that in and your engine instantly "burns up"?

Not quite on topic, but has anyone had very bad experience with oil? I always ran synthetic in my 900 and decided to try Castrol synthetic of the same spec. Car ran like a complete dog! I didn't get 25 miles out of that oil before I changed it back.

    Brian,

I still sport my fastrack that was issued to me out of SF many moons ago. It works great at speed on the toll roads down here. My daughter borrows it on occassion, for her car, I haven't received a letter yet?

Just waiting for the fuzz to get wise and issue speeding tickets via fast track....I'm sure it's just a matter of time....

    Back to the subject....
Change your oil regularly, monitor the level frequently and make sure you have the correct oil level in your engine, weather it's dino or synthetic or a blend....

I've mixed oils for years in numerous vehicles all of which achieved mileage of 6 figures with never a problem. I even do it in my track vehicle that has over 170K miles on it.

Talking about oils is like talking about religion. No one will convince anyone of anything...

Yes they can be mixed... But where they 'get you' (and this gets muddled) is in the details. For example redline makes oils for gasoline engines & diesel. The diesel has a higher detergent. So I wouldn't want to 'MIX' the diesel in my gasoline engine..
Think of it this way, 3 in 1 oil is petroleum based just like regular valvoline, or pennzoil..BUT would you mix the 2 in your family car or F-car? I hope not.
Using a petroleum oil that is appropiate for gasoline engines and a synthetic is permissible. I certainly do not profess to be an expert but that is my understanding of this, and I did stay at a Holiday Inn a few times..
Really just good comon sense will dictate what is appropiate & NOT appropiate. In this age of litigation, companies/business MUST spell out almost evrything to protect the consumer from themselves. It is my belief that this is the reasons for the 'concerns', rumors, and urban legends such as this.
