Need to fit a new starter motor to 328

In a nutshell:

Disconnect the battery.

Jack the car up, put it on jack stands, or raise it with a lift.

Disconnect the wires from the old starter motor, noting where they are connected.

Unbolt the old starter. Be careful, it's pretty heavy, especially when you are laying on your back under the car. You will have to try some different orientations to get the old starter motor out.

Once the old starter is out, put the new starter in, and line it up with the bolt holes. Insert bolts and tighten it down. You can check for a torque setting, but when I did it on my 308, I just got them good and tight.

Reinstall the wires, making sure you have them in the right spot. Because the starter is smaller and the power connection post may be oriented differently from the old one, you may have some problems getting them on. Be patient and don't over-stress the cables.

Reconnect the battery and you are good to go.

I'm curious if you will have to modify the cables going to the new starter (lengthen them). That's what it looked like when I started (and stopped) to install mine.

By the way, it's not a light weight starter (unless you have something really different). It's 1.83 lbs. lighter than the original. That's it.

 

328 starters must be different ... but nowhere near the 25 lbs I think you quoted somewhere .. . my 308 stocker weighed 16 lb .. new one weighs 8 lb

There is very little difference in weight. Original starter (on my 328---imagine a 308 is the same or similar) is 4.61kg (10.14 lbs) and the smaller non-OEM is 3.79kg (8.34 lbs.) for a difference of 0.82kg (1.80 lbs.) I was hoping/expecting a nice weight savings also but it's not to be :-(

Not sure where the figure of 22 lbs. for an OEM starter came from unless 308 starters are way different from 328.

Overall length of original 328 starter is 26.5 cm long and non-OEM is 19.0 cm.

Just replaced a friends starter on a 308 QV Mondial and it weighed in at 21lbs with solenoid.

 

Just a thought but are 308/Mondial starters steel and the 328 ones ali. Hence the same size but a big weight difference.

 

On my 328 starter the main body is steel but the "nose" (where the gear resides) is alu. and very light. Also, the arm that engages the gear into the flywheel is plastic. Don't know if it is on a 308 starter.
