is it bad to buy a salvage title car ..i know a true ferrari collecter would never buy one, but what if i just want a cheap driver that's in near perfect condition and the price reflects the salvage title.minor front end damage that was fixed years agao.. thanks matt

    Dear Ferraristi,

"The quality remains long after the low price is forgotten"

I wouldn't buy a salvage title TR. TR's are very expensive to maintain.....you will never feel you have a keeper every time you need to spend more than a few bucks.

Buy a good TR.....you will love it forever!!

The only way one can justify buying a salvage car is knowing he will have to drive it into the ground to get his money's worth and knowing he will be penalized for the salvage stigma when/if he decides to sell.

This doesn't work well with exotics but can for lesser cars used as daily drivers. As long as the repairs were done properly it's a non-issue.

I have a BMW bought at bottom dollar, a theft recovery vehicle. I put 3 to 400 miles a week on it. It looks great and drives great but it has that nasty stamp across the title. It really won't matter after I put another 150k miles on it either way.

If repairs are done properly on a car at the time it was "Salvaged" or "Rebuilt" the maintenance shouldn't be any higher than most cars without.

It still depends on how it was maintained BEFORE it was wrecked.

It also depends on whether it was badly wrecked or not. It doesn't take much superficial damage on a TR for an insurance company to total the car even though the frame and running gear are perfect low mile examples.

Greetings... I purchased a 90TR that had some body damage. Later found out it had a washed title. So at one point in time she was deemed a total loss. I was really bummed at first but I got over it and know that this car will stay with me. I could get my total investment back just selling her as a parts car (not on my watch). It really depends how much money you have into her. I have a total investment of less than 30k - and I mean less than 30K.. more like mid 20's which includes exhaust - which really did not need to be replaced. She runs great - have the service records for the last 30k service and other services preformed by the person I bought it from. He had no idea or lets say I am believing he had no idea. He owned the car for over 10 years. This car has less than 25K on her. If this opportunity never came up I would probably never own a Ferrari up to this point. Yes I am in the body industry so that helps big time. The great thing is I drive her. No worries about chips and watching the odometer of the miles I am putting on her. She is a driver and I get to fully enjoy the Ferrari experience of "the drive" vs. the "preservation" tippy toeing around town - watching every little thing. Just some food for thought - and here she is. There should be homes for cars with situations. Crazy thing is I have a clean "A" N.J. title.. Go figure

Mr. Chairman, I'm very glad it turned out well for you and that you "got to save one from the pound".

But personally, I would never go there. If it had some damage in the past and it was properly repaired, no problem, but I wouldn't buy a car that was not repaired yet.

I'm with Mr. Chairman on this one. I would buy a "storied" car if all checks out mechanically and cosmetically, the price is reflective of the history, and I was simply going to enjoy the car as much as possible. By the way....Mr. Chairman....that is one heck of a deal you did on your car! I commend you and am a bit jealous - you did really really good - and are way ahead of the game.

Thank you.. I feel that I was at the right place at the right time. Owner was so disgusted that the car was hit he didn't want to look at her. Found the parts (all new old stock) and got her done. Next year the 30K.

My dad was a bodyman. Saw damaged cars my whole life. I actually prefer to see and buy a car prior to repairs. You really know what type of damages were on the car rather then reviewing an estimate and questioning how the repairs were done. Just my preference.

No no.....you misunderstood me. I'm saying a TR is an expensive car to maintain in general....not a salvage car. What I'm really saying is that the salvage car and the standard car cost the same to maintain....but which one don't you mind putting money into.

    .....that's what I'm saying !
