Alain Prost says "No way GTR does 7:29"

Hearsay? Are you joking? They say they talked to the 911 guy - they gave his name, gave the numbers, and gave the details of the cars in question. That's all you got - to call it hearsay? How do you figure it's hearsay when it's right from the guy who was involved in the test? I've got news for you - when it comes from the horses mouth, and the source is given, and the numbers are given, that ain't hearsay.

As for the possibilities, you keep going back to "all the tests that back up the numbers".... well, there's also a lot of tests that counter the numbers. There is generally a small group of press cars that get circulated to the various magazines and press for testing and comment. The idea that this small and contained group may be "tainted" is not outside of the realm of reason. Therefore, that several magazines all had excellent numbers using the same dubiously-stock group of cars in no way constitutes a body of evidence that surpasses new independent tests.

Alain Prost is a subject matter expert. He has stated that this car is not capable of a 7:29 time. The chassis guy with 1000's of laps of the n-ring has stated through action that this car is not capable of a 7:25. The 911 guy who purchased this car for the purpose of comparing it to their GT2 has stated that this car is not capable of a 7:25 time, unless it was on DOT R tires. Magazines have done dyno tests of the car and found that the claimed numbers from Nissan are simply wrong.

How much more evidence do you need?

The car doesn't perform the way Nissan claimed. I have no doubt it's fast and a great car - I fully expect it to be. To think that it's got anything for a Zonda or Carrera GT on the N-ring is just lunacy. Whenever that point is raised, all the proponents of the car ever come up with is "it's got advanced technology"... like Nissan has figured out how to engineer a car where the hapless nitwits at such underperformers like Porsche and Ferrari have previously failed. It just doesn't pass the smell test. And now the independent tests are coming out.... and they don't jive with the Nissan claims. At all.

I also find it interesting that you now own a GT-R. You 'forgot' to mention you pending order when you were talking about your unbiased journalistic integrity

I don't think any flames are needed... but it seems to me that you are among the ranks of those who are looking through rose colored glasses at the performance of this car. When the excuses become "well, there are 2 types of street tires, that could be the difference" or "the Porsche expert who'se job was to wring out the GT-R and compare it to the GT2 was a crappy driver who is 25 seconds down on another GT-R driver" lines start coming out, you know the excuse barrel is getting to the bottom

 

Some of you people are idiots, you all whined like babies when Millen, who has close ties with Nissan, drove the GTR against the Z06 and 911, yet you turn around and keep talking about someone in Porsche who couldnt get the times Nissan claimed. The pot calling the kettle black........... Ill spell it out for you, sophisticated AWD system/electronics and seamless, super quick transmission with SHORT gearing, combined with the fact that its much easier to drive make the GTR a quick car despite being heavy.

 

The ring is a high speed track, the GTR i not.

 

about time they proved that this (gtr)time was BS....................cant wait to rub it into the fanbois..............since they have been giving every1 so much crap about how fast the GTR could lap the ring

To take the same GT-R that Nissan used, put their best driver in and then run it against Shumacher in the FXX Evo on the ring. After shumi stopped at the finish line and had a beer the Nissan might cross the finish line..

The times are the times. The only joke is the tin foil hat crowd that discounts dozens of objective 3rd party testing to cling to the one or two exceptions. A porsche product manager is your unbiased expert? really? Are you serious?

I respect Alain, but the SME are the ones that have driven the car at the Nur, not the ones that speculate. in test after test, the GT-R shows it's more than the equal of a 997 turbo. The data is the ultimate subject matter expert.

My on personal customer car (not press car) has already posted a track time at Willow Springs that says that Nissan is not overstating any claims. Video will come out in a few weeks.

What car I order has nothing to do with Motor Trend's, Road and Track's, Car and Driver's, Fifth Gear's, Top Gear's, EVO's, and Torque.tv's coverage or results. that is what we're discussing here, not my own coverage which is still a few weeks away.

I'm sorry, I'm just totally cracked up on this point I have to chuckle about it again...A porsche product manager is your unbiased expert? really? Are you serious? Really now who is making excuses here?

First Porsche is far to professional to really publish something like that, sure they bought a customer car, they all do. Heck Nissan bought a 997tt as their bogey car. But one thing is for certain no reputable manufacturer discusses their internal findings of their competition's product to the media.

For those of you still reading this with an open mind I'll say this.
Results vary, tests vary, I ask you all to consider the majority of data, and base your observations from that, rather than extremest reporting designed to pump up someone's blog traffic. (trust me I know all these bloggers, and they're getting a real chuckle out of you guys and the "controversies" they create like this).

As for me I took delivery of a GT-R premium a few weeks ago, took it to Willow Springs International and ran it against Porsche's finest. (phenomenal cars all I must say). My car is a customer car, not a press fleet car. We had a professional driver (MOPAR guy actually) drive my car around Willow. His first time out ever in a GT-R, and within 3 laps, he proved Steve Millen's GT2 beating Willow time is the real deal. I wish I could give you the hard numbers, but I have to wait just a few more weeks when we release the story.

If you're interested in my own experience with the car, I am writing about it in my personal Blog. Nothing formal or even professional and I for one will quickly state I'm no writer or photographer so please don't go "beating me up" on journalistic integrity, I have none to damage

 

FWIW the Owners manual states that running 91 octane will result in diminished performance. Living in SoCal with a GT-R I can now 100% say this is the case, it's a pretty noticeable degradation in power, So I've been filling up on a one third 100, two thirds 91 blend to get up to 94, and the power returns. I talked to Harman at Willow and they said they are seeing some retard on the dyno with California 91 and stock tune.

Yes the Z06 is a faster car and harder accelerating once you get moving. The GT-R pulls mid 11s on the virtue of launch control which I have to say hits harder than my old 550RWTorque V8! Once you get moving though the weight does dampen the acceleration. compared to other cars at this power level. Truth be told though, the GT-R weighs as much as other 4 seat sport coupes that are out these days (E92 M3, Camaro, Challenger, Mustang GT500, 6-Series, etc) so I think this is just what we should expect from 4-seat performance moving forward.

Compared to my e46 M3 though the GT-R is astounding in corners. No drama, no roll, limitless traction. We observed the GT-R beating cars with a far better power to weight ratio simply on the merit of massive corner exit speeds due to maintaining silly speeds through the corners.

 

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Its all a bunch of lies *Sarcasm* Pathetic that the GTR truly shows how marque-biased a bunch of people are, all because its a Japanese car made by Nissan. Even in the face of massive evidence they still wont shut-up and accept the fact that Nissan made a damn good car, especially for 70 grand.

People who have no interest other then to fact check (read: the Corner Carvers) have lapped cat back, and more aggressive street tire [ not dot R ] faster then the GTR around willow.

 

I think it is probably a fine car (maybe not as fine as Nissan thinks), but the thing is so UGLY its mama could not love it! I love the way the NSX looks as well as the last of the Supra's and the last 300ZX (HATE the 350Z)... I would not park a GT-R in my garage if you gave it to me just because it would be to painful to look at... Maybe it would be different from behind the wheel, but I'd have to close my eyes and feel my way to the car every time I went out to the garage to drive it!

 

I have no idea what they're doing over there, but again I have seen my personal GT-R run head to head with Porsche's finest. Same day same driver same track, unbiased professional. Again, I can't quote numbers until we release the final video, but I will say that the bench racers can go find something else to speculate on.

So far the only data I've seen presented has been manufacturer, media and amateur. Nissan made claim, the Media results corroborate, and now customer data has corroborated media results.

What I've seen here, has been people pointing to the edges of the bell curve and dismissing the large body of supportive data.

 

I find it very amusing to see all the folks who feel somehow personally threatened by the GT-R's greatness

 

The professional driver in the last Cand D test pointed out that the tires on the gtr were something special and going from the optional tires to the normal tires dropped lap times by 4-5 seconds. It essentially went from slightly ahead of a gt3 to behind.

I think its rather telling that trap and 1/4 mile times of owners cars are nowhere near nissans claims. Its a fast car no doubt, but somethings rotten in denmark.
