    Hey Gang,
The rear shocks on our Mondial are getting dodgy. They are clunky and the rebound damping seems shot. Given my experience having Konis rebuilt, that option is out of the question, unless I do it myself. (Can you get parts? Is this something you can do yourself?)

What I would really like is to do a QA1 conversion like I did on the 308, but they use an entirely different mounting system. Anyone have any thoughts or experience in this realm?

    Thanks

    Birdman

I would be interested too (together with the other hundred things before I get it back on the road)

Maybe a possible group buy of mounting systems?

I found that when my BB need shocks that the cost of new ones ($145/each) was about the same as having them rebuilt...so I opted for new ones. Possibly something to look into?

yes - I had a set of adjustable Koni adjustables and a top adapter from FChat Sponsor Carobu - can set shocks to how you like AND lower the car if you want to.
There is a thread w/ photos (imagine that) I started somewhere; try searching on Mondial Lowering in threads I started.
    Just one proven option.

I had all new 'hats' as I like to call them machined to use custom coilovers for my mondial. the shock style the mondial uses is a spherical beering mount, problem is that it's different from the std. in that the coil spring is retained by the factory top mount 'hat'. the strut travels thru about 15* of rotation at the top, this makes for an interesting and odd design. the large rubber bushing needs to be retained or replaced with a spherical beering if you go the route of making your own new 'hats'.

    couple threads on the process...

http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=86258&highlight=coilovers (this version ended up not working out as the above mentioned rotation caused binding)
    latest http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123191&highlight=coilovers

the final version I didn't post up apparently, which is alright since I'm going to be re-doing it again with a different beering to simplify it and give it a cleaner look. one day.....

    Scott,
Make a kit for the mounts and sell them! Can they be fitted to QA1 shocks?

    OK, another question...

Are replacement stock Konis available for a reasonable price anywhere?

RIk, they'd work the same, just factor in spring rate.

Birdman, I'm working on it, as always it's a cost issue.

now if we could only do something about the spaghetti noodle swaybar :)

    Birdman,
Last I heard, Tire Rack still had about the best prices on Konis. Altho, if you haven't looked lately, be prepared for sticker shock as they've probably doubled since you had your rebuild done.

I've been sketching out QA1 front mounts for the later 328/Mondial. Maybe it's time to put our heads together again on a project? (smg2, if you're seriously planning on developing mounts for the Mondials & later 328s, let me know now & i'll back off.)

Finally found these photos; Aluminum racing Konis with Eibach springs on adjustable perches. As stated, a new top plate was fabricated from Carobu.
    1. Rear shocks showing top mounting and heavy stock spring
    2. Mounted adjustable Konis with lighter weight and slightly higher rate Eibach springs (also w/ s/s lines and Brembo rotors)
    3. Stock ride height
    4. Lowered about 1" with new Koni shocks showing overall height
    5. Lowered 1", different angle better showing wheelwell clearance.

Although slightly off topic, those s/s brake lines make an AMAZING difference.

I have a brand new spare pair of standard front Konis I bought on fleabay about 4 years ago for £100. I will never use them as I will go for the Qa1's/similar when the time comes.

I ordered from Eurospares om Monday morning and delivered Thursday afternoon. In pounds I think they were 85 plus shipping. Local price for a rebuild was over double!

Did you check what weight difference there was between the originals and the new versions

I did not weigh them, but as you can see the large size and weight difference between the stock and Eibach springs was very significant, perhaps up to 5 - 10 pounds per spring.

    Thanks Russ.

I will have to do a search for your other thread that you did.

Can you remember off hand what they cost from carobu for the adaptors?.

I don't know if this a question for the Q&A section.

As my car when finished will be a minimum of 215kgs (473 lbs) lighter will there be any handling issues with uprated springs. i.e. too stiff and will bounce like a go kart if it hits a bump.

Are there any guidelines that I can go on using the weight of the car?.

That was a few years ago, so I am sure they have changed;call Carobu and ask for Tate Casey. The weight difference between the two spring/shock assemblies is startling.
