LOS ANGELES - An unemployed man with an advanced finance degree who was despondent over his own financial problems shot and killed his wife, three children, mother-in-law and then himself in an upscale home in a gated community, police said Monday.

Officers found the bodies Monday morning after the wife failed to show up at a neighbor's home to go to work, Deputy Chief Michel Moore said. The deaths occurred sometime after Saturday evening.

A handgun that had been bought Sept. 16 was found near the father's body, Moore said. The father left two suicide notes — one for police and one for friends and relatives — and a will.

The notes attest to the man's financial difficulties, and he takes responsibility for killing his family members, Moore said.

The family members' names were not immediately released because police wanted to make sure the children's schools had time to make grief counselors available. The children were sons ages 19, 12 and 7.

The man had a master's of business administration in finance, formerly worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers and Sony Pictures, but had been unemployed for several months, Moore said.

Moore did not specify what financial trouble the man had been in. He noted that the family did not own the home.

PricewaterhouseCoopers spokesman Steven Silber had no immediate comment. Sony Pictures Entertainment spokesman Steve Elzer did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

The gated community, called Sorrento Pointe, is among several developments along curving lanes and cul-de-sacs set on the foothills of the Santa Susana Mountains in Porter Ranch, about 23 miles northwest of downtown.

Ryan Ransdell, who lives across the street, said the house had been occupied by the family for about a year.

"They didn't socialize too much," he said. "They kept pretty much to themselves."

Financial difficulties can push many people to the brink.

What they don't realize is that it's one of the easiest problems to remedy. Obviously, his problems were more mental than physical!

Wow, he worked with those companies, and was unemployed. Something tells me he wasn't such a great worker. I mean, that's not what it exactly means, no offense, I'm just mentioning that, so please do not jump and flame me. But that is very sad. My father made "bad" stock decisions, but I mean, we are still surviving, and he isn't about to kill something or someone (hopefully). I mean, that is a sad story, to kill someone else because the person is having a hard time. I mean, do they not think, what happens tomorrow, no they just jump on suicide. In the time it took him to plan this, he could have at least saved himself. Really, a 7 year old, a 12 and 19 year old have so much to live for if you let them. Financial situations like this are not uncommon, hopefully something happens about this, and can help everyone.

In all honesty, my family is in a "bad" (I overexaggerate, but it's hard) financial situation, I regret going to ASU, but I realized, I can easily work my ass off, and pay for this, and work and afford this career. I just can't own a Ferrari(insert any exotic car) by 27 as my goal was set, but I am still going for it. Supplies, and everything are so hard for me to afford. I honestly could not afford a 1.50 block of foam, and was over drafted on my debit card. I asked my teacher about this, and he told me he didn't care, I told him, I was not asking for his sympathy, I was asking if there were any alternatives since I couldn't buy the paper and pens, pencils, and the other supplies. It's really hard for me to ask for money from my parents, because it just is awkward, since I usually never ask for anything.

I still buy things that I would like to have, my wants, not the needs. I bought my PS3 for $56.10 because I did surveys and earned enough gift cards and survey money. Took me 3 years, I know I could've worked and bought it in 1 week, but I didn't have time with school.

Wow, I just realized I typed a paper. It's 4:26 AM, I am pulling an all nighter since I procrastinated(which just makes me look bad since what I wrote up there:D) I guess it's time to get back to work. Grammer nazis, have fun. I don't think I misspelled or misplaced any grammer. :D :D

    It is sad, very sad.

I'd imagine the suicide notes answer a lot of the questions we're asking and thinking. Since there were 2 separate notes and a will left.

I'd say the guy was on an extreme downward spiral, and the unemployment or family problems topped it off. It sounds as though he may have been rising fast in the business world and whatever happened, everything just fell to the bottom abruptly.

We don't know if he was laid off, fired, or quit of his own free will. It seems to lean towards either a lay off or immediate termination. But you never know.

I wonder if it happened while everyone was asleep? Or done very selectively and quickly. Because any 19 year old would either run to get away or attempt to stop his dad.

I feel for all their family and friends.

Unfortunately we'll be seeing a lot more of this coming up as the US's wheels fall off. No matter how bad it gets there's always tomorrow. It's a shame the guy had to take down his family too.

Industrial Design, yeah I know, I will be spending a lot more than I intend to, but it sucks not having money to buy food and necessities, and then not having enough for supplies.

Maybe he should have moved into the city. I'd lose my **** if I lived in a gated community too.

Why's that, just curious. I lived in suburbs and some apartments, so I don't really know what's wrong with gated, IMO gated communities are safe and that's it.
