I just bought a 2003 Ferrari 456M GTA and I was wondering if there is anything wrong with my gas cap. If I reach inside the vehicle and hit the button the actuator works but by the time I go to open the cap it is locked again. I have to be standing right by the gas cap when the button is pressed for it to open. Is this normal for this car. I also purchased the vehicle without the tool kit and was wondering if anyone knew where I could get one of those. Thanks for any help you can offer me.

Is the engine turned off? You can't open the gas tank or the trunk with the engine running. You can find almost anything for your car on ebay if you are patient and keep looking. I was able to get all of the manuals, leather case, flashlight ,etc. for far far less than what the dealer would have charged. I've seen tool kits, trickle chargers, tire inflation kits, luggage ,etc. available from time to time at 1/4th the dealer price.

It is supposed to pop open. There is a spring that is released when you hit the button that causes the door to "spring" open (get it?). Anyway, the gas door spring might be broken or missing. I have no idea how easy or hard it is to replace.

On my car (a '95) the engine must be running, or the key to be in the on position for that switch to operate.

+1, you may have to spray it with wd-40 to get the spring to work right.

Also - sometimes the door is slightly out of alignment with the hole into which the latch slots when you close the door. Gentle twisting and WD40 will correct the problem. The aluminum is soft so be careful.

sounds like the spring is messed up. It should just pop open...

I have been having issues with the buttons place in the center console of my 550, namely gas release and boot release. I believe they are essentially similar to 456M. They simply need 200 actions to finally perform. I got the boot release button replaced and it looks like the gas filler button should be changed at next service.
I guess lack of usage is a killer.

Thanks for all of the responses. I guess for the time being I will have to be happy that I can fit my golf clubs in the trunk because I can use my putter to release the gas cover while I am standing right next to it. Anyone know a good mechanic they can recommend in the Chicagoland area?

Interesting I never knew this. My trunk and fueld cap do not open either and it never occured to me that it could be something to do with this. My car has just gone in for the cambelts, so I'll check that when it returns.
