308 air injection plugs needed. Badly.

My 1976 GTB has the angry cricket sound at idle after my removal of the air injection nozzles.

I have been trying to track down a set of these special plugs for the last couple weeks. Unfortunately, seems like everyone who retailed them at one time is out of stock. I have also sent several emails to the seller (sophia) who listed them on ferrariads, but have gotten no response thus far and don't feel comfortable blindly paypal'ing 200 bucks.

Does anyone have any leads on a set???

Check with this guy, he used to have several extra sets that he was trying to sell. Great guy, I'm sure he won't steer you wrong.....

I hade the anoying "chirp" and it turned out to be the exhaust tips. As a quick test get some tin, roll it up and insert it ito the tips...take it for a ride. It may go away. Mine did. After that make permanent inserts.

 

This drawing shows the dimensions needed -- although things like the head size/style can be different, and the thread relief groove isn't required if you make it out of a standard bolt, etc.:

Just curious -- if you did remove the air injection nozzles, and didn't replace them with the special plug with the 8mm diameter spud on the end, what did you use?

 

I used a shorter plug to just cap the hole.

 

I have an aftermarket Ansa exhaust.. The car only started making the sound after I removed the air rail and injector system. Although it seems like a great excuse to step up to a tubi or x-ost system!!!

Does this chirp almost make the car sound like an air cooled VW beetle? My 308 is turbo'd, so at the last service I had the headgasket replaced with a copper one, and in the process they found an exhaust leak they fixed. Now it has an "angry cricket" (great description by the way) chirp, only at idle. Once past 1000rpm it's gone, but before that it sounds a bit like an old beetle...er cricket.

The chirping sound comes from the exhaust i think.

One of the cars i looked at had these homemade insert tips that took the chirp out. Mine has the air plugs installed yet still has the chirp.

I had an exhaust leak that sounded like a VW but that went away when i fixed it (yea me!) but the exhaust still chirps when accelerating. Hoping an exhaust will fix it.

 

I can thank my six year old son for the cricket analogy, and I can thank F-chat user ChrisMorse for sending me a set of plugs he had earmarked for his car. What a great guy. If anyone locates "Sophia" have him drop me an email so I can get Chris a replacement set of plugs.

Understood. If the set you got from Chris does solve this problem, please post the length of the threaded portion on these "bad" ones -- might give a data point to others of what to avoid for sure in the future.

 

smg2 made my last sets...just saw this thread, as I still have them loose...

One of my cars had the rails stripped and the injectors plugged using ball bearing in the swedgelock top which I thought was innovative..ROTFLMAO!

 

I've been looking into having a batch of air injection plugs run off. I have quotes from a mfg.

However I'd like to know if there's enough interest for me to make the investment. I'd need to be comfortable that I could sell 5 to 8 sets in order to go forward with sourcing them.

Based on an initial quote, it looks like the price would be close to or at $200 for a set of 8 plugs.

The plugs would be made using Steve Magnusson's drawing posted earlier in this thread. I've been talking to Steve & am pretty comfortable that I understand the subtlties of his design. The material would most likely be brass which is very compatible with Al, thus unlikely to corrode & be unremovable.

The Weltmeister® Air Injection Plugs for the 911/928 look to be shorter than these & definitely don't have the nose that plugs the header opening. My guess is that these are mf'd for a sump drain plug, maybe for a motorcycle:

What? ... just about any shop I know would make one set for that myself included.

A few sets should be way way less than that.

You don't have to be that specific for their use, but you've got the right type of application in mind. Those "Porsche" plugs are just standard DIN 908 Hexagon Socket Screw Plugs meant for blocking off any low-pressure hydraulic port with metric cylindrical threads -- they come in sizes from M10 x 1 up to M64 x 2 (and some suppliers, e.g. Fabory, even offer some non-standard sizes, e.g. M8 x 1).

Does anyone have a picture handy of how the air injection air is introduced in the exhaust stream on the Porsche 911/928?

 

That's a not to exceed price, I am hoping to do somewhat better.

FWIW GT Car Parts sells the plugs like those pictured above off the shelf.

I thought guys want to pay silly money to have the extra tit to stop the "chirp" ... I'm not sure if my car makes this chirp or not. I'll record some video so people who have heard "the chirp" can comment on whether or not my car has it.
