308 door mirror

I just got a mirror from Desire308 because the glass on my driver's mirror is "worn" on the inside. So, does anyone know how to get the glass out without breaking it? I can't seem to figure out a way to get enough room to get a small screwdriver in there. (I assume it has "clips" that release like a modern car)

Also, the glass in his old mirror (carb car) is blued liked a modern BMW, etc. The glass on mine (QV) is not. Did they blue the glass back then or is this a replacement piece of glass? (When I asked my local glass shop about getting a blued mirror for the 308 they said no way.)

 

Bump. No one has removed the glass in these things?!?!?! I really don't want to break it guessing nor replace the whole housing!

 

Ok, my German auto shop (Autobahn Engineering) in Melbourne (having worked on old Ferraris before) removed the glass from the extra mirror I bought from Desire308. Here is how you do it. Move the mirror to one side and insert a thin screwdriver behind the glass. Using a flashlight to check, CAREFULLY pry the ring on the mirror away from the electric mechanism in the housing. Once you get both nibs out of the slots move the mirror to the other side. Repeat. The interesting thing is that on both mirrors one of nibs broke. It appears that a dab of glue was applied to hold them in place. None of the others had any glue on them. I popped the broken ones out and will use some CA glue to put the one back in place on the mirror glass. (I may use a small dab of black rtv to hold the mirror in place once I put it back in.)

If you look on the mirror glass picture above you will see the circle attached to the backing. It is plastic. That broken line on your mirror is from someone trying to remove it. That is what will happen if you try to remove the mirror from one side only (I know because that is what my old one looks like!).

As far as a mirror replacement, try Patrick at FerrParts. They have a destroyed QV on site.

As far the blue mirror thing I really try hard enough I think. Plenty of European cars have that blue tinted glass now-a-days. I'm sure had I poked around harder (or talked to my German car mechanic) I could have found someone will to cut the correct color.

 

I don't blame you in the least. BTW, I seemed to have been a bit asleep this morning. It should have read:

As an update to this saga, make sure, if you replace the glass, that you silicone BOTH sides of the inner plastic mirror glass housing. While cleaning one day I ended up popping out the glass on the siliconed side (not enough there I guess). It also broke the other nib off on that same side. So, I siliconed the snot out of it and stuck the other nibs back in. For some reason they don't want to hold. So, I am doing the other side with silicone also.
