I agree completely This a a wonderfyl car to look at and I am sure great fun to drive. As long as it is not promoted as a real Ferrari this person should be congratulated. There should be an accepted place for good replicas. just one man's opinion tongascrew
Talking about replica Ferrari's in a place like this is like acknowledging the rather large elephant standing in the room. There are many different notions of what constitutes real or original, including legal notions and which you believe would realistically be purely personal opinion. 1 - A car built and modified in period such as the breadvan, surely that is real ??, and since it hasnt been modified since it stopped racing, it should be original. However, Ferrari Classiche wont certify it. 2 - A car built with some components including its chassis, such as most Jaguar D- Types, well how many shades of gray are there. 3 - The same as 2, but with two equal "BITSA's" such as most Bugatti's , 1 with everything but the chassis, and 1 with the chassis. Which is original. NEITHER ? 4 - A car built from last known remains such as Bentley OLD No. 1, it isnt at all original so.............. is it still a Bentley ?. 5 - What about a car built from bits, in the 1950's or 1960's, some of these eventually have their own history even though they might not have any or very few original parts in them. 6 - A car built in recent times, a complete fake but built to exact specifications, would that would meet the classiche requirements ? and so would be deemed original ? In the case of #3 the BOC and eventual legal point was it should have 3 out of 5 main components, between chassis, front axle, rear axle, engine and body. Then it was allowed to have the title real and thus could not be called a replica. As for #4 it was proven in the british courts that since it was the last known vestige of Bentley OLD #1 it could legally carry the title of that car. As for #6 we have alreaddy had accusations of this happening. What I want to know is what happened to (or could happen to) Chinetti's and Violatti's P - cars and what status do they have with Ferrari, Violatti's HAS been certified according to what I have read, what about Chinetti's ?. Does Chinetti still own both of his P-cars ??. Cheers Have fun Tim
Looks pretty cool, claims to be a "Ferrari 196 SP Barchetta Alloy, built in 1990 in Modena by ex Fantuzzi workers." http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220284209234&indexURL=1&photoDisplayType=2#ebayphotohosting Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Specific keyword search reveiled nothing. Interesting car none the less "replidoodad" didn't work either. Mods, feel free to delete this thread at any time.
Since there have been a few threads recently regarding replica Ferraris, here's a couple of photos of a "59 250TR" with a six digit serial number. This one isn't one of the good ones, but I thought it should be shown. Comment away! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
The funny part was one of the concours judges said it was the real deal! Not all judges are created equal I guess!
The good thing about replica's like these is that they once again remind us how beautifully crafted the Ferrari (Scaglietti) bodies really are.
I don't know what that is supposed to be -- but that isn't even close to a 250TR with Fantuzzi coachwork. It really amazes me that people buy this junk. It must be the red paint and the sticker on the side that gets them excited? There are a few really good recreations (not replicas) out there that would fool the best of concours / FCA judges. (I'm thinking of a certain recreation SWB and a few GTO's in particular built 10-15 years ago) Fortunately they are few and far between and now identified. Most of the people who build these replicas since take way too many shortcuts due to limited budgets or build them from pictures and use their own interpretation of what they looked like. (at least most of these are quickly identified at 50+ yards away like this one) My favorite replica are the ones with the square tube chassis -- just like how they were built at Ferrari originally! (NOT)
BTW, for those who have reported this thread as being out of place, if a replica is Ferrari-based (GTE, 330, etc), we will generally allow the discussion to remain in the Vintage discussion forum. After all, the story of some poor, vintage Ferrari is involved.
The sad thing is that 90% of these replicas drive like crap. I have only driven three that were halfway decent, a Favre 250 GTO, a 250 TDF and a 250 Cal Spider. They had pretty much exact copies of the original chassis, so they actually felt like the real thing when you drove them. I would rather have a 100 point 250 GTE than most of the replicas that are out there. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I was going to point out that that GTO must have just bitten a lemon, but that's only the beginning. I like the British adverts that claim it was rebodied "in the manner" of a GTO. That seems like honesty in advertising. I have nothing against well-done replicas. It's a real surprise that so few are done well.
I'd be happier with a 250GTE in good mechanical shape that looks a bit scruffy than most of these replicas. The one at the beginning of this thread is hideous!
Too right!! I couldn't believe it was entered for judging. When I first saw it something just didn't look right. The more I looked, the more odd things looked. When one of the judges said it was the real deal, I asked him about the 6 digit serial number being all wrong for this car. The photographs are kind of distorted because of the lens used, but it still doesn't make up for all of the things wrong.
I found a side profile of the replica in the first photo and compared it to a real TR 59/60 #0774. There is some distortion in the top photo due to the short focal length used. I tried to size them to a similar size so you can see the differences. Image Unavailable, Please Login
It looks more like 'inspired by' I have to say though, that the car seen by itself still constitutes a pretty motorcar. Maybe we should open an 'official replica thread' and post all of'em there with chassis numbers.
