Having Trouble Removing Trojan.ByteVerify

I’m not a computer expert by any means. I just follow directions and try to troubleshoot in a logical manner before asking for help. However, I have spent a couple of hours trying to do something that in theory at least, should have been fairly straightforward. No progress, lots of wasted time, and now I need help from the experts.

- Automated system scan ran late last night/early this morning (Symantec/Norton Protection Center)
- Results said that I had Trojan.ByteVerify and it needed to be manually removed
- Went to their instructions page: http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2003-090514-4048-99&tabid=3
- Basically,

1. Disable System Restore
2. Update the virus definitions.
3. Restart the computer in Safe mode or VGA mode.
4. Run a full system scan and delete all the files detected as Trojan.ByteVerify.

- Steps 1-3 carried out with no problems
- Step 4 is where I am getting stuck

When I boot up in Safe Mode with System Restore disabled, I can’t “find” my Symantec/Norton program in order to run the full system scan. I know that may sound odd, but in normal mode, the Symantec/Norton icon is in the task bar where I can access and run. However, in Safe Mode, it is nowhere to be seen.

- No task bar
- Not in Quick Launch
- Not in Start Menu Programs
- Not on Desktop
- Went back to Normal Mode and tried to create and send a shortcut to my Desktop – no luck
- Can’t find it via C:/Programs (Can find a Symantec folder, but nothing relating to running a system scan; just appear to be old install files from this computer’s build)

I am quite sure I am missing something really obvious – Step 4 should not be so difficult.

Looks like the problem is solved. Just in case anyone else has this situation, I found a solution that didn't require a safe mode reboot.

- disable system restore
- delete Java temp files
- run scan via Trend Micro House Call
- allow it to delete problem files
- re-enable system restore
- reboot normally

Don't know why the Java temp files were important, but everything looks good and Symantec/Norton full scan also reports all clean.
