Yes, of course he was lucky to win it. He won because if rained in qualifying and he was the guy who was on track at the right time with the right setup to take the pole and hold it to the end.

He did a great job - but it was not exactly a case of fighting from the back in an inferior car to clamor his way to the top, was it? The cards fell his way and he took the win....

That makes him superior to guys like Kimi and Hamilton who have real wins in tough conditions? That's silly. I remember Kimi having a car problem in qualifying, starting from the back row and fighting his way throught he grid to finish 3rd. I remember Kimi doing amazing things over the years I have watched him. Hamilton has had some masterful races this year and last. And based on one win and one good performance today, you are going to say Vettel is better than Hamilton, better than Kimi, and is the next Schumacher or Senna?

Sorry, but the facts are entirely on my side on this one. If one of us is suffering clouded judgement, it's not me in this case. Vettel may indeed be a great talent that will flourish in the future, but it is waaay waaaaaaay too early to call it at this point. Hamilton has shown that he is the real deal. Vettel hasn't.

    Timo should be applauded.

His strategy worked out perfectly, didn't it? I am sure Toyota are very happy with him. What was he running before the round of pit stops? He finished 6h, ahead of Heiki. I think he was 7th or 8th before that. Had he pitted, he would likely have finished 8th or worse. By staying out, he made a bid to snatch Hamilton's 5th place from him... he was unsuccessful, but he did succeed in stealing the spot from Heiki. He gained more points than he otherwise would have. It was an excellent decision and paid dividends without question.

Yeah that's kind of what I was thinking. Since when were McLaren's inferior cars? When he is winning races and improving a Williams or a Force India car I'll start thinking he's one of the greatest. Until then he's proven is that he can take a winning car and win with it. Nothing wrong with that though. Regardless a big congrats to Hamilton! I may not be a huge fan of his but he drove the race he needed to drive and took the championship. Here's to hoping the fame doesn't get in the way. I'd hate to see him turn into a total ******-bag.

The best part of that race for me? The Renault that took second place. What a way to end the season! Renault went from a car that could only finish in the points of people dropped out to a car that is winning and threatening the podium. What a fantastic turnaround for that team! I constantly say to all of my F1 buddies that Alonso is the best driver (read: driver, not human being) on the grid and that only proves it if you ask me. The Renault was fast all weekend and there was absolutely no luck involved in it getting there. Hopefully they keep it up during the off-season and that car is a title contender next season!

Who is this guy ?? What an idiot. Why don't you propose to Lewis. You and Peter Windsor should become lovers!!! If you can't see that Hamilton was beat by better drivers, this year, as well as last, you are not being honest with yourself. Admit that he let the championship slip through his hands again, and only won it due to a fluke, and you will sleep better tonight. Or you can go to bed like Lewis, knowing that you were really second best to Massa, and knowing that the woman lying next to you, is only there for the press.

Perhaps you weren't aware of it but the Formula 1 World Drivers Championship consists of EIGHTEEN races.
    - Yes I am aware of it no need to try and be a smart ass.

You saw ONE of them today, and you want to award the title for the entire YEAR based on this one result?
    - Never said anything about this one result being the make or break all please pay more attention in what I typed.

Nonsense. Hamilton won due to the culmination of the actions of the season.
    - The actions this season were a joke just like they have been for sometime now since the FIA started to get bright ideas on how to make more money.

He won today precisely because he is a smart and seasoned driver.
    - Never said he was a dumb driver nor did I say anything about him being a seasoned driver.

Massa won today and he deserved it wholeheartedly.
    - Never said he didn't but thanks for backing up what I was trying to state in the first place. I apologize for not trying to be more clear.

But Lewis won the season and he deserved it wholeheartedly.
    - The word wholeheartedly and Lewis do not go together, please don't do that again its annoying.

I hope I'm more clear now and my opinion is met with the same respect that I give everyone elses on this forum.

    Thank You
    Frank

look guys, teams have radios and clearly Glock was instructed or chose to let Hami by for his or Toyota's benefit. Maybe a friendly alliance, maybe a monetary reason or a future trade, who knows. This kind of behavior should be reprimanded; if all the drivers have other's interest instead of their own, then where is this sport heading? Unfortunately penalizing Glock wouldn't change any results, however, I wish this incident would be investigated or clarified for me.

Mike isn't an idiot-I respect anyone expressing his/her opinion. The Brits are proud of Lewis and they should be-but even the biggest LH supporter Hobbs at the end of the broadcast said LH was lucky. As for LH's personal life I think most of us here don't give a F. People who said Massa isn't worthy of being a WDC aren't paying attention, and that includes me earlier this season; Schumey said he was good and I think he knows more than we do in this matter...Montoya said earlier in the week that the car is what counts and he's correct IMHO-its all about technology......

    All of 2008.

The Ferrari has been markedly faster than the McLaren all year long, except in the 'cold' and, until recently, in the wet.

Not sure about last year, the times and such weren't fresh in my head.

All I hear is waa waaaah waaaaaahhhh.

I'll wager any of us would swap places with Lewis in a heartbeat. He's dating a beautiful woman. He's in his early 20's. He's rich beyond his wildest dreams. He's famous. He's in great health.

I think I see where your problem lies... jealousy. Last year Kimi pulled the win off by the smallest of margins, only due to mistakes that Lewis and McLaren made. This year it went the other way. Lewis deserves this one entirely as much as Kimi deserved it last year.

If you last much longer on the site, you may learn a thing or two about how people express themselves here, son.

So, given that Lewis has performed, in aggregate, significantly better than Massa this year, how can you say as you did earlier that Massa is the "true WDC"? He's not. He did well today and won today. But he did not win the season. In other words, he won the battle, not the war.

I thought that when you said "In the end Massa is the ture WDC, he went out there and gave it his all. He qualified 1st and stayed there through out the whole race as well." you were talking about today's race. Were you talking about some other race from the past? You said Massa is the true WDC, and you justified it by saying he qualified on pole and held the position through the race. To me, that sounds like you are basing your judgment that Massa should be WDC on today's race. Because if you were basing it on prior events, you would have to acknowledge that Hamilton came into this race 7 points ahead of Massa, and that was after an FIA-imposed penalty. The WDC *is* based on the season, not on one race, so if you are saying Massa is the "true WDC" based on the season in total, then you are simply mistaken - because Hamilton has more points because he's done better overall.

Lots of armchair quarterbacks have stated their opinions on here.... however, there have also been numerous people who have first hand experience with Hamilton. Whether that is meeting him, driving with him, or working with him. And they have ALL - to a man - said he is gracious, kind, selfless and very humble. So yes, he did wholeheartedly deserve to win today. I have no doubt he put forth his best effort, and was rewarded in kind.... despite the FIA trying to keep things artificially close.

i haven't bothered to go back through the last 6 pages, i'm sure the dialogue has been pure FACT and no BS , but it's good to see a new world champ ONLY have to finish 5TH and ONLY get over the line due to the influence of others, nice.

at least when schue had to come what 8th? to win the WDC one year, he did it with his eyes shut.

So you are saying it is impossible that Glock simply wasn't fast enough - despite being 16 seconds slower on the lap than Hamilton - to have kept the position?

Given that Toyota spends hundreds of millions of $$ to be in F1....

and given that Toyota has no affiliation or ties with McLaren....

and given that Toyota wants to do as well in each race as they possibly can....

and given that, clearly, Glock and Toyota were attempting to do just that by staying out on slicks....

....what possible justification is for you to say "Glock was instructed or chose to let Hami by for his or Toyotas benefit"???

I am sure you agree that Ferrari broke the rules last race when Kimi moved over, yes? Clearly they should be investigated too right?

Just look at the timing. Glock was something like 16 seconds slower. He stated he was having trouble keeping the car on the track. He did not likely know what was going on and who was where, other than he knew that some guys who were bearing down on him like angry stampeding cattle were duking it out for position and the WDC. Glock was many seconds slower per lap... and his tactic of keeping the dry tires had already paid off as he was originally further up the grid, but losing spots continually until the end.

His choice was... drive dangerously and try to hold off someone - whoever it may be - and potentially cause an accident, even maybe get exluded from the whole year

Or drive sensibly at the last corner of the last race, take his finish (that was 1-2 positions better than it would otherwise have been), and enjoy it.

He made the smart choice. He said himself he was having problems controlling the car, and that it had become wet in the end of the race towards the end of the track. There were guys with intermediate tires bearing down on him. And you feel he should start swinging left and right and blocking people?

    Nonsense.

So the argument, then, has become that Lewis did win, but he didn't win "enough" to make you happy?

Look at the bright side - if Massa hadn't had the help of the FIA, he would have lost the race 2 weeks ago. Better?

Mike, as I replay the last lap, the track sure looks dry to me. Glock blatantly let all 5 cars by instead of fighting for a strong finish. In a race, people are supposed to do just that, race. I didn't see any struggle of the car sliding at that part of the track. Maybe I am wrong but please do clarify that so I may sleep better tonight.
