    My dad died back in 1994 when I was in college. Mom found his single engine and sailplane logbook along with his E6B. To best of my memory I have never seen this before, he may have shown me when I was really little, but doubt it. Even when he bought me a few lessons when I was 14 and we talked about his previous flying I don't think he had any idea where it was. This has been very special for me as I looked through for first time last night. We flew into some of the same airports like Mineral Wells, Stephenville, and Wichita Falls 50 years apart. Both of our solo XC's used Wichita Falls as a stop!

    From best I can tell he never got his Private Pilot. He flew solo and was getting close as he completed the XC's, but all about the same time he took a job in Reston(VA), had kids #4 and 5, and lost his medical. He flew sailplanes for 2 days and I do remember him telling me that was the best flying he ever did.

    Looking over the entries from 50 years ago I notice a few things. First of all none of the airports are listed by identifier, just the name of city. Also many of the flights are just 0.5 hours or less although he did fly frequently. Several different planes from a taylor-craft, 150, and 172. All were LOW on HP from what I'm use to. :) The E6B is much nicer than mine. Also there is a radio license in log book, I guess that was required for plane radio comm?

    Here are a few bits of info from the log book...

    • 1st lesson 10/15/57 (22 years old)
    • Student Certificate issued 1/17/58
    • Planes flown Taylor Craft 65 HP, Luscombe? 75 HP, 150 - 100 HP, and 172 - 145 HP
    • Airports listed Ft. Worth, Arlington, Wichita Falls, Mineral Wells, Sherman, Stephenville, Breckenridge, La Porte, Beaumont, and Galveston in Texas and Hull? in Virginia
    • Solo on 8/21/58 with about 16 hours
    • About 60 hours total
    • 2 Sailplane days in a Schwetzer 2-22, no year indicated.

    I would be curious to track down some of these planes and instructors from 50 years ago since most are in the same area I'm flying. Mom also found dad's Navy patch.

    Rob, the log looks like mine( wherever it is)and I remember that I had basic training in Wichita Falls in 1944 at Sheppard Field. As I remember, the field was east of the post. I remember seeing PT-19's flying around when they were training Waco glider pilots there.. Sometimes when we were on " maneuvers" out in the mesquite we would run across hulks of gliders in the bush. All I can recall is 110 degree heat and lister bags full of salt water at the intersections of the post streets that we HAD to drink. Then there were marches in 100 to 115 degree heat out to the boonies to sleep with the scorpions and tarantulas. Good stuff that your dad left you.

    That is def. a nice piece of personal history. Things like that I always find myself reading through more than once, for some reason. (ie. service records on my LS, I just find it interesting) It must be really cool to have your father's logbook to read though! Congrats.

    Great find.... treasure it.

    I was thinking the same thing Bob wrote "It looks like mine" when I looked at the pictures. I guess they all look pretty similar.
