Many, many months back the light in my closet went out. Changed the light bulb and nothing, so I assume it's a busted fuse. Or something else?

Is there anything I can do on my own to figure it out. It's my roommates house and I've reminded him a few times, but his memory is terrible and his gf pretty much makes plans for them every minute of every weekend. If I don't do something it'll never get done. It bothers the hell out of me not being able to see that great in the closet. And makes for a half-assed cleaning.

    Thanks.

Do you have a hand held electrical meter?

Oh, of course you do, even my wife has one, and she's a girl.

Check to see if you have voltage in the socket, than check voltage at the fuse box.

    Thought about the breaker box.

Will look into the voltage meter.

This is a new learning experience for me. Trying to learn as much stuff that I don't already know for when my home ownership comes about.

    Thanks.

Have you tried a bulb that you know is good? If all the lights and outlets work in the house, it is probably the socket itself rather than a supply problem.

The breaker box is next, it should be obvious if the breaker has popped, as the switch will be half closed.

If you have an old house with fuses, the fuse will have the filament missing or appear burned through the little window. Buy the fuse and screw the new one in.

Either way the box will probably have notes to what each breaker goes to, but closets sometimes get wired into whatever is handy. Last year our bedroom circuit would pop the breaker at random times, it turned out to be the light switch under the house for the crawlspace had an intermittent short and was scabbed on the bedroom circuit.

That has to be the most sold multimeter in the world. I don't know any shop dealing with that kind of things that doesn't have it in their stock. I bought mine for 2,99€, so $12 is a bit on th pricey side...

I would bet on the base tab in the bulb socket not making contact with the bulb base. A blown fuse (or tripped breaker) would affect other areas of the apartment and be noticed elsewhere. Could be a second bad bulb, or a broken wire, but those are less likely than a socket with a tab bent down. If you are going to bend it back up, make sure you turn off all the breakers or remove the fuses to prevent the smell of burning flesh. Better safe than sorry.

Remove the bulb. Look inside the socket. You'll see a contact tab in the center of the socket. This is what is supposed to be touching the center contact on your bulb. It's quite likely that this contact tab is bent down to the point that it no longer touches the bulb when the bulb is screwed into the socket. The solution: bend the contact back up. WARNING: The contact is "hot" unless the breaker is turned off, you WILL get shocked unless you follow safety precautions. Don't just turn off the switch first. It's best if you test the socket with a voltmeter before reaching inside it, just to be sure it's "cold".

LMAO! Not mean. The only reason I don't have one is because it's not my house. My dad may have a spare that I can ask about. But it would be a good choice to throw in my tool box. Maybe my roommate has one, but I doubt it.
I tired a new bulb immediately to no avail. The bulb that was in the socket appeared to still be good, and I never got the "blown bulb" that is typical with a light going out. The house is new and everything near my closet works properly.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll take a look at the socket to start with.

LOL. Eh, whipped, or whatever you want to call it. Just how things go. He's been pretty busy with projects at work too. He's just slow at taking care of things, and imo very bad at communicating. I sometimes question this when he complains about his subordinates. But it's whatever. It's only temporary. Hopefully I'll be able to start looking for a house in the next year or so.

Thanks. I'll definitely turn everything off. I use to help my dad around the house and he always made sure to make it a point to emphasis turning off the power to what you're working on.

Thanks too. Bill may have beat you, but it's still useful to read it more than once.

I know I get repeatative with Thank You's, but Thanks everyone. I really do appreciate it. It's a learning experience for me, and the more issues I have now, the more I'll know for the future and my home.

Had a similar scenario occur recently. Turned out that the switch died. Can check the switch by touching an insulated wire across the two screws on the switch, thereby completing the circuit. The bulb will light if the switch is the problem.

Stupid question, but is it on a switch? If not, are you sure that there isn't one that got turned off?

Not your problem. Get a stick-up battery powered touch light and toss it on a wall. Done, for about $10, and no potential of electrocution.

Not a stupid question. It's on a On/Off Switch. Not one of those release buttons that's functions via the opening and closing of the door.
Unfortunately it is. As well as having to spray for ants this weekend, that have once again returned. And buying paper towels, even though I bought the last set. I'll just subtract that from Novembers rent.
    Standard halogen.
By my count somewhere around 20.:D
I'll have to check into that if I get some time this weekend and can actually diagnose the problem. No cat thankfully.
