Where do I find one of those 30's or 40's airliners that can execute a vertical climb on only one engine?

Also, what was the smaller black "attack" plane? To me it looked like a Lancair with a bunch of paper mache' crap duct taped to the wings

Most airplanes with enough smash can be pulled into a near verticle and even a loop, usually by diving to pick up airspeed, which is what it looked like the pilot "did". I'll defer to the high time DC-3 pilots here, but I'm thinking the Gooney would have to be near Vne to pull up over the top as it would really bleed off airspeed pretty quick.

Marchetti SF 260s, the one in the movie with a turboprop, have been a staple of many smaller air forces for light attack duty. Air-to-air, not so much. Their designer, Stelio Frati, also designed the homebuilt plans made Falco, which is almost a smaller clone. Many Air to air civilian "combat schools", including the one in Dallas, use recip SF-260s. The SF-260 has often been called the Ferrari of light aircraft.
