I built a few kits in my younger years and am starting up again. I purchased a Revell 612 Scaglietti 1/24 scale kit to get started. It seems to offer pretty good details and the price is about right. I was wondering what the major differences are between the brands of kits, ie Revell and Tamiya, etc. I'm hoping to justify spending the extra for a Tamiya kit. Any input would be great!

IMO TAMIYA is about the best-----satin finished chrome parts for realism and surgical level fit quality---- BUT the prices have really escalated.Maybe you can get a TAMIYA for your most favorite car model.Fujimi is really good as well.

Tamiya and Fujimi are the best IMO (i am also an amateur so like kits that fit together well) i hated revell and will never waste any more money on them again.

Revell is the only company that makes a 612 kit. I like Tamiya best. Revell does offer a motor, Fujimi does not most of the time.
Hasegawa is also very good. Look for out of production Rosso and Modelers kits, as they are very detailed(both companies now out of business).

Thanks for info, guys. I'm planning on starting some Tamiya kits in the future, and will try the others as well. Maybe I'll even post some pictures if they turn out okay! :)

Revell kits often have a lower parts count and somewhat "softer" detail. Their old Testarossa kit has the side strakes molded into the body. The Tamiya kit has them as a separate piece that gets glued into the body. It looks a LOT better. Rosso made a nice 512TR kit. They went out of business but it's available on ebay.

If you want a Daytona, look for the old Fujimi kit. Its Borranis are made in 3 pieces and are easily the best looking wire wheels ever made in plastic. The spokes are VERY thin and scale-appearing.

Enzo? Fuhgeddaboutit. I bought Revell's but that was just to rob parts out of it for another project.

If you afford the Japanese kits, by all means go for it.

Thanks for info Lee. I'll probably do a couple practice kits before going for the more expensive ones. I'm just now getting my tools/paints/etc ready to be able to really do a complete job.
