Sorry Of Topic Ed Nice DKW/Sachs 125 MX behind the 250LM. I have a couple of those bikes. Did you motocross as well?
110 more or less, but more if one includes "brokered" cars. In a span of 31 years (1959 to 1990) that's only 3.5 cars per year. Sheehan probably does more than that in a month.
Catching up on older posts: My oldest son's Sachs M/C. I remember Wexler's and Chris Cord's LM's at Hollywood Sport Cars, and they swore one of them had a fiberglass body. Does anyone know if that's true, and if so which? Love that assembly-line shot, Marcel. Remember the hoo-haw trying to prove that they had actually built the required number?
Ed any itch to get back in given the current down turn in prices? Also, I like the idea of an Ed Niles photo thread. Erik
Coppa Inter-Europa. Monza, 6 September 1964. Left to right: 5897 (David Piper), 5907 (Roy Salvadori) and 5899 (Nino Vaccarella). Vaccarella, on the right, in 5899 won. Behind: 29 = 250 GTO #3705 GT of Nicolosi, 30 = 250 GTO #3851 GT of Prinoth, 32 = 250 GTO #4675 GT of Sigala and #39 = 250 LM #5843 of Bianchi. Marcel Massini Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks for the kind words. The itch never quite goes away, but at 84 I'm no longer able to get down and polish spokes. Or more accurately, get up again! I'll post pix as appropriate, but I think you've already seen the best ones.
Marcel, Any more shots of 6047 both in blue and more current photos? Any interesting fact about this LM. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. and Mrs. D a number of times and viewing their collection. They speak very highly of you, and said you are always a welcome house guest . Erik
I think I may have posted these pictures here before, but I can't find them in the archives. I took these pictures in the infield parking area at Seattle International Raceway, probably around 1970 (I could find the exact date with a little research). I remember that it was red, and it had a broken headlight lens, and I think it had a "for sale" sign posted on it. Someone was apparently driving it on the road that weekend. Which LM do you suppose this is? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Probably 6173 which was for sale by Grand Prix Motors of Seattle/WA in 1969. Ken Starbird of Northridge/CA then bought it 15 August 1969. Marcel Massini
Chris told me he had an LM with a fiberglass body. Bought new to be a driver not a racecar. Something about being alergic to fiberglass so he kept it for only a very brief period. I can't remember if Chris had more than one LM pass through his hands. Jeff
5975LM in post 191 I notice a few things in the photos Appears to have mufflers and chrome exhaust tips. May have made it a bit more socially acceptable to the neighbors but not original. Is that the correct finish on the cam covers for this car? Appears to be black crackle with red on the raised portions of the casting. Jeff
Thank you, Marcel, for the identification info on my old pictures - undoubtedly correct! I noticed that in post 168 Terry mentioned the old article by David Davis, which appeared in Car & Driver, May 1965, and told his story of driving an LM on the road from Philadelphia to New York City. If anyone is interested in seeing this article, I can scan and send it to you if you send me a PM with your email address. It's only minimally illustrated.
Jeff 5975 GT: Yes, mufflers and exhaust tips added later because of street use. Black crackle finish on cam covers incorrect, of course. However, this is the LM that has the lowest mileage in the world, never been damaged, two owners only, and has been sitting since 1967 in the museum (not that I really like this....). Matching numbers. Unmolested. Marcel Massini
But certainly not unmolested if sold, painted yellow with green nose, raced and crashed... So, it's OK to have also some of such cars in Museums. Here is #5893, at the beautifull Indianapolis Museum. This is the car that won Le Mans in 1965 and the last Ferrari winner ot that 24 hours race. A too long time now and a shame... Ferrari should do something. Image Unavailable, Please Login

Speaking of fibreglass, the front and rear clips on the #8165 Piper car are fibreglass. That was done by Piper, not the factory. #5893's body looks just as it did after its last NART Daytona race. They did run it with 5 spoke wheels in the race. The W196 is right next to the 250LM in your picture. Alot of great cars in that museum. Most are not on display to the public in the Indy Museum basement. Worth a visit. Tom Tanner/Ferrari Expo 2009

Marcel, Those LM pics at Ricard are cruel..... One of my biggest mistakes ever was selling 6051 (we had the car in one of my companies and my then business partner didn't want it to be raced so we sold it; I got rid of him too!) I raced the car many times and it was just FANTASTIC. Remember racing it in the rain at Zandvoort in a Formula Libre Historic race, swapping places with a Lotus F2. I think we swapped places like twice every lap, he won, I finished second because I spun off at Tarzan on a patch of water. Still finished second because we had lapped the whole field. I was using BFGoodrich tyres, like I did at the Nurburgring later that year.
