Darn it! Always seems to be my 19 inch Modular Alloy Wheels on the SA that keep giving me problems. Thanks to all for the advice 6 months or so ago when I scuffed the rim a little. All fixed up nicely. Now it seems that there is some weird kinda growth (maybe mold or fungal) creeping under the laquer coat on the alloy, just behind the spokes and rim where the bolts go in. (the hardest bits to clean without removing wheel) Strangely, only on the front wheels and wont rub off, whatever I try. Only a little bit at present but worried it will grow/spread Seems to have appeared over the summer. Anyone else experienced the same? Any idea what it is and how to prevent it? Thanks PAUL
Will try when I get a moment. I took it to IMSS yesterday. They thought there is some form of corrosion got under the laquer/finish on the alloy as it is spreading (in a small way...looks like spider legs or fine tentacles) all round the rim, from under where the modular spoke peice bolts on. It is on both front wheels, but not back so they suspect batch problem on front wheels and have taken photos to send to Italy to see if anything can be done under warranty. Thanks PAUL
Hi Paul, it could be the clear coat peeling off, i had a set of custom wheels with a clear coat over a brushed aluminum finish and i had a bunch of weird marks all over the wheels over time, however without a photo i wouldn't be able to tell. Good to hear your car is still under warranty.
I had a set of HRE's and they simply could not stand the humid summer as Jon noted. I was quite disappointed and ended up getting the wheels disassembled. stripped, rebuffed and re-clearcoated and sold the car before that aged. Hope the factory solves your problem but doubtful as your car is no longer a spring chicken!
Hi Jon. Just arrived in Dubai this morning and off to London tomorrow. Been reading a few threads but not much to post about lately!
Dubai for 24 hours, London for 48 hours. Will be back in HK long before you are in London. Too bad I will miss you.
Hi DM I think my car would probably bite you if you said no "spring chicken" to her face! After all, March 2006 MFR date is not that old? A mere youngster compared to the 355s near her in the car park! However, you probably right, the warranty is wearing thin and I am but only hopefull on IMSS pulling it off on a warranty claim. If not, where did you send the HREs to be re-done? Thanks PAUL
Almost 3 years - you are right - still a youngster! We can communicate by PM on the wheels. I suspect that Jon knows other suitable shops.
Paul I know some good wheel shops that can refinish your wheels no problem, however the car would need to be on a lift or some sort while the wheels are being redone which would take a week, and other than IMSS or the other large tuning companies here i dont know anyone that has a lift. These are your stock wheels and if you don't have a spare set to put on in the mean time, its probably better off having them done at IMSS. Regular curb rashes and what not i know where to get them fixed up in record time but to strip the clear coat and paint and refinish a multipiece wheel it takes time. Alternatively i can put a set of Dymag's on your car and im certain you will be more than happy about the performance benefits of these wheels.
Jon - can you recommend a place that can refinish F355 wheels without them bubbling again within 12 months. I had a pair of wheels stripped down to bare metal and after a few months they look diseased. Thx.
