I think I'm falling in love with the Pantera. Help me.

As you live in Ireland if you waited for a dry day the car would have about 12 miles a year on it!



Actually I went back to Ireland two years ago for my cousin's wedding and we had nine beautiful days of 70-80 degree (F) weather. I couldn't believe it. I hadn't been back since 86 and a LOT had changed, not just the weather!

Wonderful car! More pics would be nice.

 

So is headroom in the Pantera better than the Mang? Also, can someone explain to me this "dropped floorboard" process? I'm 6'3" and so this is a modification that I would probably have to consider some day when I have the ability to afford such a car. I really hope the Panteras stay an "undiscovered bargain" for at least a few more years while I save up (market comes back!).

 

Emilio...check this one...flares are a little 'BIG', but the car is supposed to be NICE according to some on the Pantera boards...

yes, headroom is slightly better in a Pantera....at 6'3" you are going to need one with the floors dropped modifications anyway!

What exactly is involved with the "floor drop modification."? How are they creating more headroom? Thanks!

 

Travis, pretty basic really...since MOST Pantera's have encountered the rust bug, instead of replacing the floors stock, they are cut and re-welded in a full 1.5 - 2 inches lower? I have no real experience with it, but with most bare metal restorations it is often done...another trick is to custom fit the seats to YOU, bolt them directly to the floor, and thereby removing sliders underneath, lowering the seats further.....

 

Cool Emilio, look forward to hear what you've got...I did find ONE on craigslist and snagged it quick..so they are out there. I also looked at a 'project' Mangusta right close to home a few weeks ago and this one had the wheels removed more than 20 years ago and they are near new condition with original Goodyear Arriva's that still have excellent tread. I actually had my hands on them, would have made the ultimate show set-up - exactly what I was looking for, but that set of FIVE is going with the car.....

 

Thats my kind of Pantera, except the US bumers, exhaust and sidemarkers.

The vendors sell "dropped floor pans" but from what I have read it puts the car too close to the ground and the seating is uncomfortable because your legs are up in the air with no support.
I have read that it is better to cut the floor behind and on each side of the seat and bend it down. Then you weld metal into the gaps you have created. This keeps the front of the seat higher for better thigh support.

Whether you will fit depends on how long your legs are-- if most of your height is in your legs you may be OK in a standard floor and seat car.

 

Or pound out a big oval in the roof for your head like they did on the GT40's

very nice original-original-original example. As such, purely a "collectable" As pointed out by Bob S. and others, no handling is the most severe strike. If all the Pantera's required mods to make them streetworthy. An unmolested Mangusta may be a most unremarkable drive. The orange doesn't help IMVHO. But at least DeTo didn't think blue interiors were a good idea either. that would have been the ultimate slap down.

this is the fellow who traded his Ferrari 275GTB for a Mangusta way back when!! Now selling. I like it in orange...hell, I like them in ANY color!

 

I now know of 7 Mangusta's for sale....yikes! 5 are listed on the Mangusta International website, another on eBay, and the 7th is a BIG project! That is 5% of the world's Mangusta's for sale!!! wtf?

 

It's all about the poor economy.
In the Vintage threads it was mentioned that there are over 30 275GTBs for sale (or was it Lussos?). Anyway, about 10% of the entire production for sale at one time. All guys hoping to unload the car before it loses even more value.

 

Yes, there are definately some nice Panteras, I love the GT5S, Wow, what a car

Problem is if you want to buy a "regular" Pantera and create a GT5S you can probably get a used 430 Scuderia for about the same $$ that will run rings around the old Pantera

 

You can go out & buy a completed one for a fraction of what the 430 costs.

 

GT5S sell for about $60-80K, if I remember correctly.
The problem is there are very few of them and they come to market rarely

 

Your correct. William was talking about converting a regular Pantera . A clone, will be a fraction of a F430 .

i found a nice GT5S yellow with vertical webers and well over 400hp in Italy
i was really going to get it BUT seller went from 60k euro to 77k euro....too much money for it imo

the GT5 looks even better imo (almost impossible to find for sale though...)

 

IMO, both the GT5 and GT5S are amongst the rarest cars on the planet.
