Using Nitrous in a 308 with carbs.

Is it doable, I was thinking about a wet system with 16 nozzles, 4 at each carburetor and about 50-100hp and of course the system only get activated at full throttle and the timing is then retarded and with the right spark plugs.

Have anyone done this with a 308 or is this a bad thing to do?

 

Can the drivetrain/clutch handle the additional load?

 

Not according to a thread I just read, but can no longer find..... [Sorry - It's not in the 308 section as I don't "go there", but darned if I can find it.]

The comments therein seem to suggest that the rear stub axles and/or uprights will (may?) fail. But, I'm not sure how many HP he's feeding 'em.

Thanks, but one thing we must remember is that with full throttle and extra nitrous is not the same thing as a supercharger with torque at the bottom of the rpm.

 

In Bishop's great book on Ferrari maintenance, he has a short chapter dedicated to how one guy was doing nitrous at Bonneville IIRC and the guy did a motor meltdown. I think he had a supplimental fuel line become clogged, ran to lean and holed a piston or two, with poor results.

Yep, the fuel delivery is important so you don’t go lean; nobody wants a hole in any piston.

Anyway with the right settings it is okay in any engine, but will the 308 take the load at full throttle?

 

Did that to my carb 308 about 25 years ago. put in jets until I ran out and could not destroy the motor. Took the motor out to rebuild it for more HP and it miked out just fine no acelerated wear. I used 4 throttle plates w/ rod nozzles for gas and NO with hob switch to make sure there was fuel pressure before the NO came in. It was very crude in those days no rev limit. What city do you live in I could help you make a monster. 100-150hp is very easy. Best thing is it is more than 100hp because NO build torque and HP across the entire RPM range.

DO 308 HAVE Forged Pistons?

 

This is what I've come up for my 308 with the Haltech ECU and I wanted to have a semi-covert system.

I'm going to use the main fuel injectors (existing EFI conversion) for fuel enrichment and limit the rpm that the nitrous will be engaged if I have a problem running out of duty cycle.

Billybob ... isn't this more fun than rebuilding 348 gearboxes/fixing Ferrari blunders? LOL.

YES! What is really fun is when you have a Nitroused 308 sleeper and you eat Pbugs, vette, and any ferrari in a straight line. I've run 308 carb cars with nitorus plates and 308 qv care with a single plate just after the throttle body. My thinking was that since these cars were CIS and had a cold start injector they must flow a wet mixture in the most dry manifold decent enough. I ran lots of nitrous in the QV too and no damage known. I think maybe I'll run some on my 550 just for laughs and giggles. It really does not need any more power but what the heck. I'll probably be lazy and keep the amount of NO small and read plugs to prevent lean out. If I wanted to do it right it would be dinking with injector pulse/rev limits on and off/and NO entry after the MAF. To me doing direct port means you want max NO flow and that means bigger injectors and bigger injector and short duty cycles for 99% of daily driving would probably mess up drivability.

 

fatbillybob thanks for you answer, that’s very impressive, you force this little engine to work hard and with no problems, sorry to say but I live in another country, Sweden that is, otherwise we would have a nice project.

I was thinking to drill in the nozzles under the carbs, and let’s say I make a 100hp spray. The engine is stock with a clean work in the intakes so they run smooth and the sodium exhaust valves is now stainless and this is a dry sump engine.

Is it better to make a plate under the carb instead of drilling the intakes?

 

Whatever disrupts the air flow is always best so that your normal drivability will not be effected. I like plates because they are dumb low tech. If I did direct port etc I would need to be sure the design was sound before I did it and then have to think about all the negative effects. The positive effects are only on nitrous which is a very small percentage of the time. To me that's what is so attractive w/ nitrous over turbos etc
