My girlfriend and daughter want to fly down for her son's ceremony. It is on Jan 2nd. Looking for advice on hotels etc. Use taxi's or rent a car etc. My girlfriend does not want to rent a car if possible and drive in a city she does not know.

San Antonio is very spread out, with Lackland being kinda off on its own on the SW side. That said, there are a few inexpensive hotels near the base, but even then, it's a fer piece. She is smart to book early if she wants to stay near the base, as a class graduates every week. As usual, depends on how much you want to spend.

San Antonio is very very EASY to get around in, every place conneted by highways. Graduation from basic is a big deal, and something to be very proud of - I would recommend getting a rental car and take the young airman out to a really decent dinner after graduation, perhaps to the Riverwalk area. He will be hungry. :)

Again - graduation from Basic is a big deal - and the bigger deal you make it the more wonderful it will be.

    Best to the young Airman,

If there are any retired/laid off etc locals who live near by I would gladly pay one well for a few days of chauffeuring. My girlfreind does not want to rent a car and drive.

My dad was stationed at Randolph AFB near Universal City. I went to Randolph High School for a while, loved the base there. It is one of the nicest bases that we have ever been stationed at. If you get a chance go on the River Walk in San Antonio, really nice place to see. I remember going to the Judson 4 movie theaters, it was outdoors theaters, just after you leave Universal City had some great times there with my parents watching movies. We used to always go to the Winns store and get a toy on paydays and then go to the Jack In The Box there, God what great memories of a great place!

I thought Lackland was the only place to do AF basic.

SA is a piece of cake to navigate. Even finding the Alamo is a breeze.

In that case she needs to book a room at one of the hotels at the intersection of Hwy 90 and Military Blvd (which runs in front of Lackland) and use a cab.

I am guessing a cab ride into the base at about $10 and into town about $30 plus tip.

I really cannot imagine someone chauffering other than a limosine service, which may be a good option for you.

It really is easy to get around, though.

We have been gathering more information. From what I am seeing she can book a hotel close to the base and get a ride with a shuttle service from the airport to the hotel. If need be she can take a taxi at other times. Most seems to happen in that general area where the hotels are so she should be OK without a rental car.
