Judging from many of the auction "estimates" quoted in Swiss francs, it seems that the quality of the crack in Switzerland is very good indeed.

Am I missing something? What is up with the $22,000 USD '79 Pontiac Firebird? That car can be found by the dozen in the high school parking lots of most counties in rural Virginia, and possibly be had for a keg of beer, fake ID, and a date with my beautiful sister.

Big difference between the London RH drive boxers in average condition and the Gstaad LH drive restored boxers.
Gstaad seems to be looking to the US for the cavalry.

How much of the drop in sale price can be attributed the world wide economic slowdown vs the 20 - 25% drop in the value of the Pound & Euro vs the Dollar?

You have the wrong chassis number (dyslexia). It is 0435 GT.
The 4th Boano prototype but built by Carrozzeria Pinin Farina.

AC Ace in the Bonhams auction was a really nice looking car, appeared very well restored & maintained, not a Bristol engined car, but still a very nice machine. 330GT and Daytona both had lots of mechanical work done in recent years, but 330 needed body & paint and Daytona was starting to show rust bubbles in a couple of places. Still, they would be good drivers for a year or two. Someone took a big hit on the Koenigsegg compared to it's new price in 2004! Surprised that the Concours E-Type didn't sell (no estimates given) as it was seriously immaculate and would be a prize winner anywhere. Guess the guy wanted too much for it...

    Coys auction on Thursday, so we'll see what comes up there. 246GT (03478), 250 Cal Spider Recreation (4749GT), 250PF Coupe (1957GT), 308 GTS (37739), Daytona (13791GT), 365 GTC/4 (16139) & 412i (ZRRY D24 00000) (?) up for auction amongst other stuff.

Well, that's exactly what I am saying. Come down to earth guys. If you really wanna sell something be realistic and stop dreaming. The party is over. It's a buyer's market and cash is king.

Both looked quite tidy Rob. There was a raft of S1, S2 & S3 cars at the auction. They all looked quite presentable and appeared to be OK. Didn't climb underneath them, but all presented well. F1 car there was a 'show' car with no comp history and the other two were F3000 cars, which don't have a competition market at the moment. 8 Litre Bentley looked very nice and appears to have sold well, Phantom II Continental sold under estimate but would be a great machine for tours and rallies. Probably needs redoing to be back to Pebble Beach standards though.

I assume there is no "Certification" on the cars at Gstaad. How long before Ferrari try and move in on that?

Just to put the record straight, this middle-of-the-road Sale actually sold 66% by Lot and 61% by value – and in addition I understand that three more cars have been sold well this morning. The Sale grossed £2.85-million Sterling overall - top-priced Lots were:

    £342,500 - 1931 8-LITRE Bentley

    £276,500 - 1925 3-litre Bentley 100mph two-seater

£172,000 - 2004 Konigsee supercar - shakes head in pained regret at some people's taste these days

And for a bit of highly publicised fun - the national press and TV here having little taste either - the 'James Bond' 1976 Lotus Esprit as used in 'The Spy Who Loved Me' was sold to a Lotus and Bond enthusiast in Atlanta, GA, for £111,500.

Each of these was a genuine sale, willing seller/willing INDEPENDENT buyer - no smoke, no mirrors, no BS.

Keep in mind that bringing one of these into the US will cost 2.5% duty 1% bond plus shipping, plus shipping insurance which isn't free either. The total cost will touch 20K on a 180K car easily.

    Yep!
As an aussie import imposts are ever in my mind with european cars.
Some F-cars and specificationst didn't get sold in Oz or only small numbers. So we keep an eye on the UK RH drive market.
Still there's a strong aversion to buying grey market cars if the model was originally sold in australia though. So we need to make allowance for that resistance too in comparing these prices to our home possibilities.
Would imagine its similar for you in the US?

sorry to differ but...i know of at least 5 confirmed cars that were refused into the sale by bonhams. they were too long some of those models already. but the cars are available....

the other thing to note is that of the cars they do have, several are repeats from last year...not a good sign - flippers will be disappointed.

the high end of the market ( 2 mil+) will still find ready buyers i am pretty sure....but anything below a mil and surely anything aimed at the <500k area will probably find it difficult.

but i will be there to see it myself...anybody else on here going to be there?

Looks like some good deals on the Lancia's . The lotus 1987 Lotus Excel SE Coupé for $2,225 looked like a good deal.

Both the 3l and 8l Bentleys in the Bonhams sale were very nice and desireable cars and sold for a fair price. The first owner of the Koeingthing spent about 50 pounds per kilometre in depreciation alone I think! Not a wise investment. Will go along and have a look at the Coys auction tomorrow and see what happens there.

Having attended both RM and Bonhams London auctions over the last 4 weeks, I would suggest that there is still "money" about at all levels, for exceptional, "no stories" cars and there is fantastic value available to the private collector.Having reviewed the forthcoming Bonhams Gstaad sale catalogue...ditto

The China bound 250 TDF at RM and Bentley 8 litre at Bonhams endorse this, whilst a Rolls Royce Phantom and Jaguar XK120 (Bonhams) both sold at half of their rebuild costs...still, anyone who spends £125k rebuilding an XK, needs psychiatric evaluation!!

"Buy the car, get the resto for free" - one of the most valuable lessons I've learned when it comes to "old motors"..thanks Mike Sheehan!

Just back from the Coys auction: These are the hammer prices for F cars
    308GTSi - sold 16,900 pounds.
OK car, clean but not immaculate - underbonnet needs detailing & some work, least desireable spec.

    246GT - sold 60,000 pounds
Only 33k miles approx, and quite a bit of money spent recently, but interior looked 'used' reasonable price for a driver I guess

    365GTB/4 - no sale @ 130,000
Nicely presented car, needs some work/detailing under the bonnet/hood, but looked good in blue. Long way off owner's hopes I suspect...

(Muira P400 to 'S" Specification - sold @ 205,000 pounds) Looked lovely in blue too. Headlight fit was a bit odd, but rest of it looked nice

    365GTC/4 - sold 47,000 pounds
Stored for a long time. Met brown/bronze with tan trim. Presented quite well, but potentially a headache to bring back to regular use. One of those cars that could either reward you after some minor titivation, or send you mad & broke!

250 GTE "California Spider" recreation. sold 220,000 pounds. Top sale of the night
very well done recreation, if you like that sort of thing...

    '91 Testarossa - not sold 30,000 pounds
Well presented 1 owner car. probably all of it's money in the current market. Should have taken the money if he needed it!

250 GT PF Coupe - no sale 120,000 pounds
Nice later car with covered headlights. Not perfect, but well presented. No estimate in catalogue ('refer dept') so no clue as to reserve.

    412i - sold 19,000 pounds
Last lot of the night. One owner car, with FSH etc. red not it's best colour, and looking under the bonnet/hood will scare off most people with the amount of stuff under there! Still, well sold as these don't usually make this level, even though they are nice drivers.

    Other high prices:
XJ220 - LHD in 'Silverstone Green' low miles etc - no sale 113,500 pounds
Rolls Royce Phantom II Short Chassis Continental 3 pos Gurney Nutting Sedanca. no sale 240,000 pounds (highest bid of the night) - Gorgeous car
911 Carrera RS (changed motor, but still RS engine) - sold 91,000 pounds
Alfa TZ1 - no sale 175,000 pounds. Wish I had the money...
Alloy XK120 - beautifully done, better than new - sold 108,000 pounds.

That's your lot for tonight! These are just hammer prices, commission etc to be added on. Comments all my own work!
