As someone who posted on this thread, I guess js430's response is partially directed at me. I don't see how courtesy is acting like a child. When I (in my list posted previously) complained about towels left on machines--it was for the following reason. I understand the someone, in the middle of some sets, may need to go get water or even use the restroom. On something that takes a bit of setting up, I think it is very reasonable for that person to "mark" that machine and for me to respect the "towel" and not jump in and begin using the machine. I think that is common courtesy and respect. However, when someone leaves (or forgets) their towel on a piece of equipment it becomes a guessing game on my part in terms of how long to let it sit. Of course I'll move on, do something else, and come back to re-check it.

Also, I am not a "germ nazi" and am happy to wipe off someone else's sweat.

But if we talk about acting like "adults" I think courtesy toward others is part of being an adult. Nothing on my list ruins my day, but I do believe that a little courtesy goes a long way to making everybody's day better.

Sounds like you don't feel that way, or you have misunderstood some of what was said on this thread.

    In any case, peace.

Scotty, thanks for taking the time to explain what you meant. I did draft my post while referring to your list of things that bothered you at the gym. I agree that courtesy goes a long way, but if someone is not being courteous (as is often the case these days), I don't let it get to me. It seemed like you did. Life's too short, and I do my best not to let others' actions interfere with my enjoyment of life, liberty, and the pursuit of hairless women. Peace.

FXBrokeback, who put you in charge of deciding what's relevant and what isn't? You are wrong, btw. My post is entirely on point. Please refer to the part of my post that begins with h and ends with morless. Would you like to buy a vowel?

Do you mind removing your spandex shorts from your buttcrack? It's bunching up and causing a serious humor failure.

Or...you could leave the forum, then you'd have one less thing to be ticked off about.

The people at my gym are generally pretty respectful. My only pet peeves are when some dork asks me mid set how many I have left to go, or when I am resting and get asked if they quickly work a set in. WAIT!

the one thing that bothers me most is when someone is putting plates on a machine and they bang each one against the other plates like it's some kind of noise competition. ugh.

Just lifted yesterday, and I was reflecting on this thread. By and large everyone was very polite, very respectful, and in general I really like where I work out. But...

There was a personal trainer working with a client. One large exercise ball, some 3 to 8 pound dumbbells, one clipboard, etc. My gym used to be a Costco, so it is BIG inside. But, the dumbbell racks are along one wall, and the benches are close to the racks. These two are parked in between two flat benches. Water bottle on one bench. Clipboard on the other. There for 30 minutes. During that time they impeded access to the 45 pound to 75 pound dumbbells and took two (of the total of 5) flat benches out of circulation between 4:30 and 5 p.m. Can you say crowded? The client used the flat bench exactly twice for about 30 seconds.

    My questions:

    1) Why couldn't they have set up this training session so as to only use one bench, or
    2) Why didn't they do all of the other exercises in the ball/stretch area, and then just come in to use the bench.

Everyone has a right to access equipment, but I also think everyone has a responsibility to be considerate of other's needs as well as their own.

    A few things:

People on treadmills, steppers, etc. using a cel phone.
When putting plates on a machine, slamming them together so EVERYONE knows how much you can lift.

I see a guy in my gym every morning with his GF who listens to his iPod when they work out together. She runs around with no headphones on. Kinda rude if you ask me. He even looks like a little prick.

People with bad form...lifting waaaay too much than they should and doing all of these unnatural things to move the weight.

People who do not put the plates or dumbells back when they are done.......or people who will not let you work in your sets with them on a piece of equipment when the gym is busy.

People looking for attention who grunt and groan loudly like they are Vasily Alexiev lifting for the olympic gold, when they've got 50 pounds on their back......instead of 500.

I'll take the "Not wiping down the machine" one step further. Once in a while you'll see these endurance nuts at the gym. They're the ones who spend 1-2 hours+ on the bike or elliptical etc. Afterwards, most of them wipe down the handle bars, but there's still a HUGE puddle of sweat on the floor and lower parts of the machine.:mad:

LMAO! Why is it so bad that he's listening to his ipod and his gf is not? She could listen to one too. Is he suppose to have conversation while on the treadmill with her or something?

Bad form makes me laugh sometimes.

I've decided bad form (as long as it isn't dangerous) doesn't bother me much. Why?

First, the more I do this the more I understand that there are a variety of training styles (ballistic lifting, extremely slow, etc.) that can accomplish specific goals, even though they may not be what I am doing.

Two, people may have specific lifting styles based on previous physical injuries and/or suggestions from a physical therapist (I'm in this group on certain lifts).

Three, given the obesity problem in this country and the number of people stuck on couches, I respect someone who is in the gym, even if (for example) they are able to do 40 pound bicep curls only because they are swinging the weights. Moving weight around, even incorrectly, makes for better fitness than pushing buttons on a remote.

Completely agree. That's why I said sometimes. I normally pay no attention to bad form, but sometimes theres one guy doing something so wrong it's scary. For instance, doing lat pulldowns and a guy pulls down the weight really fast and then lets the weight carry his arms up very fast. Makes me cringe everytime I see it.

This guy who hogs the stall in the bathroom every day at 5pm. He sits in there yacking on his cell phone for 45 minutes doing god knows what else.

Nothing helps loosen me up like dead lifts so this has gotten to be an "issue"

It's just that they work out together. Him ignoring her pretty much while she stands right there with no iPod just looking around the room when he is lifting.

Definitly would have to say when people don't put dumbells or free weights back where they got them. I sweat extremely because I work out very hard but I make sure I wipe everything down and use antibacterial hand cleaner, annoys me when people don't clean up after themselves. We have two gyms here, one for people who are everyday folk and the other for the people who think that a $30 a month gym for them is for gutter trash, so they will pay the $50 to be seen going into CLUB Fitness, la dee da!! LOL!! I attend the $30 a month gym which is clean and owned by former lady bodybuilder. No we don't have a spa or a pool or racket ball courts but they have the best of all the weights and machines you will need to work any part of the body, tread mills, bikes, stairmaster and several other cardio machines. They also give free training to anyone who wants to learn how to get fit and stay that way.

I did attend the other gym quite a few years back before this one I am going to now opened and truely I belive they have more machines and weights than Club Fitness. Club fitness does provide Tanning beds last I knew but besides that to me agym is a gym if they have everything you need to do your workout without the guys who just go in there to act like they are bodybuilders just to talk on their cell phones and drool over the hot women!! Those guys kill me cause they are the ones that don't put the weights up after they load up the bench with 150lbs and do 3 reps then stand up swingin their upper body around tryin to flex like they done something, LOL!!

LOL!! I've actually had my ass beat alot when I was a kid cause I was a bad boy, but I know one thing I don't like and thats to have to clean up after another so called grown adult, the grunting or screaming as they put it don't bother me cause hey you gotta get that last one out but hey clean up after yourself when your an adult it just shows respect for others using the same gym.......Am I right about that much?

Sometimes I leave 45lb plates on either side of the bench because most people I see tend to rack 135, then move up. So I don't always strip the bars when I'm done.

Oddly enough, the towel thing doesn't bother me.

Can't believe no one has mentioned it - the guy who IS ALWAYS HITTING ON WOMEN AT THE GYM! "So, hey, what is that you're doing? Oh, kickbacks? Need a spot?? No, yeah, come here a lot, run a lot of marathons..." Biggest. ****. Ever.

Glad someone noted the Cardinal Law of the Gym: in every gym in North America there is at least one hairy, middle-aged, naked man toweling off in the locker room at all times, no exceptions. Literally every time. They must be on the payroll.

Good point on the 45lb plates, I stand corrected, I am at the gym for me and my goals right now respectivly, sometimes I get lucky enough to get the gym all to myself since I go up twice a day five days a week the perks to living in a small town I guess.....

Hey thats me. There is no easy way to drop 175 lb dumbbells from incline chest. I dont toss them but lower them and drop to floor.

Funny reading this thread. I had a guy come up to me just tonight. Had my ear buds in, straps on machine ready to pull down. He comes up to me and starts asking me question.

I was going to say "Hey A Hole does it look like I am working out and cant hear you." But was nice let my straps off, took out a ear bud and say nope to what ever he asked and went back to my workout.

No idea why people always feel the need to try and talk to you while working out. I am not there to make friends and talk. Not there to meet a girl. Even is i was single. Not there to hang out and watch tv.

Just there to workout and get the hell out of there.

I don't agree with this at all. That's no different then saying if I am doing inclines nobody shoud be upset if I park my bench infront of the rack. If you can do shrugs with 100 lb dumbells (in good form for a decent amount of reps, not twitching your shoulders and dipping your neck so it looks like the weights moved) then you should have no problem walking the 100 lb dumbells 10-15 seconds to be out of everybodies way. Just my thought.
