Just got word yesterday that some of my photos are in the Jan 09 issue of Motorcyclist magazine. I haven't even seen them myself yet. I'll go pick up a copy today.

I know there are plenty of guys here who have been published, but since this is my first, I'm quite excited.

Once I figure out which photos they used, I'll post them here if anyone is interested.

Yea, actually I saw your post about it on here, and then a coworker had a copy of it at work and I saw it in there. Congrats to you too - cool photo!

    Congrats!

While at it, what's the process of getting published? Do you contact the magazines, or upload your photos to some database and then they contact you?

That's a good question? I have been wondering the same thing myself! Also who did your webpage for 310 Photog?

Are you going to receive any sort of compensation, or were you gunning for the notoriety of getting published?

I am sure every situation is slightly different. In this case, I was asked by an ex-gf (who works for Kawasaki's ad agency and knows a lot of people in the motorcycle biz) to take photos for an article she was trying to get published. She knew I had started a photography company and it was sort of a win-win for both of us.

I designed and built the 310 Photography website myself. It could probably use some sprucing up, but I'm happy with it for now.

No compensation for this - my goal was just to get published. I decided to start this company over the summer, so to be getting published already is good enough for me.

That is my goal as well... However, just be cautious that some Pro Photogs get upset when they are undercut. It seems like your intentions are in the right place, but I have been reading the seemingly disenchanted rants of some pro's about the magazines that are taking freebies. Some magazines (even big named ones like Stuff or Maxim) have been caught taking pictures from unassuming amateurs who don't know their copyright protections (or lack there of.) Some of the amateurs think it is AMAZING to have their picture taken by Stuff/ Maxim. Others that are up-and-coming photogs or ones that are established feel cheated.

    Ditto!

After re-reading my last post.. I must apologize if it came off as brash.

Being an amateur myself, I can understand and respect both arguments. I just was conveying some of the messages that were passed on to me from other forums I have read regarding publishing.

Last question and more of a civil one, are you registering your pictures? For already published work, I believe that you have 90 days. Also, you might want to check with the magazine and make sure that they are okay with you posting the pictures.

    Thank you very much!

No worries at all, I appreciate the helpful information. I did not think to register the photos, but I'm not sure if it makes sense to. The photos were for a very specific article, so I can't imagine them being used anywhere else for profit. And I didn't sign any contracts with them, so as far as I know, I hold the copyright and can post them all over the world. (feel free to correct me if I am wrong).

Thanks! We still have to get together and shoot one of these days...

Yah. I've been doing mostly studio work for the classes I've been talking at El Camino. I'd love to go do some outdoorsy stuff.
