Barn find stories?

I have copies of register documents; s/n 17055. Registeration issued on 03/apr/73 and suspended since 31/aug/79. Last active 08/aug/05 (new EU-papers issued) So it's still there, it seems!

Back in 1990 I was in the process of selling my 166MM and feeling a bit down at the prospect of parting with it. I was down in Carmel for a (non-car) weekend. At the time there was a fun car book shop in the cross roads shopping center and I was in having a look around. At the back of the store was a small bulletin board and attached to it was a sheet of paper with a photo of a white 289 Cobra "FOR SALE". The car appeared in perfect shape and the description indicated factory: wire wheels, gymkana suspension, roll bar, etc. 14k miles, stored since 1967, asking $50,000. This at a time when an ok 289 was trading in the $200-300k range.

I tore off one of the numbers and called when I got back home in the bay area, a couple hours later. What I should have done was remove the ad and ask to use the phone in the store, gotta love hindsight.

I called and talked to the nice man; he and his wife needed $50k to own their new home in Oregon free and clear, son had gone off to Viet Nam and gotten killed, they kept the car, ran the motor from time to time, and appologized about a small dent in the passenger door. I offered them the fifty thousand sight unseen, but he told me another party had called about an hour ago and was going to see the car the next day. I said I would be there that afternoon with $75k, but he said if the other party passes he would sell it to me for $50k. I offered him $100k and got the same response. Needless to say . . . . it got away. Cheers, George

Wow...that is just dumb. What model year is the car? What fun is it to have a car that probably needs an engine rebuild since it has been sitting so long, yet he never really enjoyed the sound, power, and experience, of driving one of the worlds most iconic cars? Does he have a lot of cars that he is ruining like this?

 

I apologize, but I am confused by this. Is there something about cars in there? What are you talking about? Not trying to be rude, but I really do not know. Sorry.

 

I remember reading a short article a good few years ago about a Barchetta literally being dug up in California. The wood of the steering wheel had rotted away, but the rest looked to be in prety decent shape after its' 'ordeal'

Does anyone remember this, and what became of the car?

Probably refers to 0286AM, which was actually buried for a while by Lou Brero, Jr., after he got tired (or scared?) of people trying to pry it loose from him (including me). Everyone's pal Bill Noon was more tenacious than the rest of us. Great old car!

Hi Guys,

Some rumors never die... 0286/AM was not buried... I wish it had been, it would have been easier to recover if it were.

The real story is simply too bizarre to believe... I have related it to a handful of people over the years. I doubt even one of them gave the story an ounce of credit but it happened nonetheless... I know... I was there and did it myself.

When I look through the snapshots of the car's recover and collection, it still gives me the "whillies."

I showed my young children the photos last year when I was cleaning out my office. (They were not even born when I purchased the car from Lou.)

They looked through the photos and both having only a vague idea of what they were looking at still thought it looked like something out of an Indiana Jones / Clive Cussler Movie. (There current favorite movie type themes.)

I am still trying to arrange a heavy lift helo at some point to recover a lost Ferrari under 15 to 20 feet of silt and nearly 100 feet of water... but thats a story for another day...

No, I understand it will remain in it's original condition (at least with it's current owner/custodian). I was very sad to see the beautiful restoration by Paul Russell of 0006M. No doubt a very fine car, but they started with a car that was all correct and just a cool patina of moderate use. - George

Automobiles and art aren't very far apart. In most cases they are one and the same.

I don't know about anyone else, but having been around long enough I know Jim's posts to hold just enough information to figure out what he is talking about. For obvious reasons I don't expect a picture posted here, but it's a fun trip to guesstimate.

 

Now THAT sounds like fun -- do you need a hand? I've been stuck studying at my desk for too long and I need an adventure...

Hi Peter know anyone in central Canada or the mid-west with a sky-hook, retired Sea King or Sikorsky Heavy Lift ? I have permission from the family to get it, I know where it is, simply have not figured out how to retrieve it economically.

Disclaimer: I know nothing about commercial salvage, just some fun musing here...

The difficult and expensive part will be uncovering it if it's buried in silt as you say. Are you sure it's buried? One scuba trip can determine that. If it is, then it seems it would be easy enough to buy/rent a dredge and suction hose, but operating it at 100' deep would seem problematic as it's too deep for anything but a short scuba trip. Perhaps you could hire a commercial diver to operate the hose? $$!

Once it's exposed and free of silt, I'd think a single scuba trip with some nylon straps and salvage bags that you inflate with scuba tanks is all you need to get it to the surface. Then tow it to shore.
