A story about how puppies saved a kid's life: http://www.wtopnews.com/?nid=600&sid=1542749 Puppies save missing 3-year-old December 9, 2008 - 5:41am HALIFAX, Va. - A missing toddler is now safe, thanks to two puppies that kept him warm while he was lost in the woods in Virginia. About 300 searchers looked for 3-year-old Jaylynn Thorpe of Halifax County after he wandered away from his home last Friday. He was missing for 21 hours. Rescuers found him sitting on a log at a pond a half-mile from his home. The family's puppies were right there with him, and had kept him warm as the temperature dipped to 24 degrees. "Without those dogs, I don't believe he would have made it through the night," says Bob Wingfield, Commonwealth Search and Rescue, tells WDBJ. The dogs were rewarded with food, right after the boy was found, reports WSLS, a TV station that was there when the toddler was found. Sarah Ingram, Jaylynn's mother, tells Fox News her son later told her that he left the yard to go "hunting and fishing." Here is a pic of one of the puppies: Image Unavailable, Please Login
Puppies and adult dogs (IMO) are pretty hip to emergencies. That story was in fact awesome (I think the pup's may have been a bit cold themselves!). At home, if Chelsea is horsing around slugging me, Rigby will go nuts and bite her. Not real hard, but hard enogh to get her point made. The same goes if I do the same to Chelsea, or if Mom does it to one of us. If Rigby bites me a bit hard and I go into the 'crybaby' mode and let her know she hurt me, she'll get all 'doggy apolojetic', cower down and lick my face. Puppies also have the power to make a grown man cry! Five years ago and three months after my best friend had to put his Lab of 12 years down, I showed up at his house with a 12-week old pure bred Black Lab pup. After I was in my friends house for a few minutes, I told him my back hurt and if he could go out to my truck and get the box that was in the back seat. He comes in a couple minutes later crying his ass off while holding the little pup! They were tears of love, only brought on by an innocent little creature that God put on thsi earth.
It was the toughest thing in my life going to the Vet with him for 'Bucky's last car ride'. Man, I wish that experience on nobody. You know you are doing the right thing and it's the hardest thing to do..."Here....Sign these papers giving us the OK to put your dog asleep" the Vet nurse says. You take your dog in the exam room, give it a big hug and say goodbye. On the flip side, the joy of a new puppy just about balanced out that sorrowful day. Side note: I have never asked my buddy why, but he kept the box his new pup came home in. It's nicely packed in one of his storage cabinets at his carport, original blanket that I brought and all!
Yeah dogs can sense a need to help alright. A few years ago after a severe snowstorm I was gingerly stepping out to my shop over a slick of ice. It was a mild downhill slope but I knew it could be really bad. I was going to get a wagon of firewood. Anyway about halfway through the ice I caught the attention of my yardmutt, Steve. Steve comes bounding over, and as usual feigned ignorance of the English language as I yelled "NO STEVE, NO STEVE". "No Steve" apparently translates into : "Come here, Boy, push your head into my hip for some petting". So. Stevie did just that. Down I went. pretty hard on my right hip. Hurt really badly, so badly I thought I might have broken something. As I was displaying appropriate anguish and "Ahhhs" and "Ohhhs", in a very manly way of course...Stevie could sense the seriousness of the situation and rose to the occasion. Rarely, do I have my unprotected face so close to the ground, so Steve started licking me in the face. As I yelled and swiped, it of course turned into a dodge-and-puppy-bark game. Yeah, dogs can be really helpful in emergencies.
Daughter did that. We wanted Ursus sinse he looked just like a black bear cub, but it was her dog. Stevie's running mate is Stewie the sheltie. Fortunately, the names are so close I only have to call one name.
"Hello Jack, this is my Lab, Fred. This is my Collie, Jim, son of Tom and Mary". Mainstream human names just don't float my boat for cats and dogs. It disallows the creativity in naming a pet, which is one our last bastians of 'out of the norm IS the norm'! Would you name your new baby scruffy, fluffy or Mr. Bojangles? I think not!
Yeah, we named our dog "Chester". It seems to fit his personality. He is a 4-year-old yellow lab & shar-pei mix. He has permanent wrinkes on his forehead. About 2/3'rds the size of a normal lab. Great dog. One of those rescue'd dogs down at PetsMart. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
And I did some marketing to drive some traffic to your wifes blog, let me know if it sends any traffic to you. Give it a full 24 hours Antony
I swear my dog, Amber, knew I had cancer before I did! She would nudge my ribcage all the time while the tumor was there. She hasn't done it once since it was removed! Also my kids can't sled with Amber outside. She will grab their coats (or attempt to) and try to pull them back up the hill! I don't think I could ever not have a dog!
I won't post the video b/c it is sad. But it goes like this: Car hits dog and a homeless dog rescues it from the highway. It's cool except for the beginning where the other dog gets hit.
as many of you know, my dog died last night. i have just now read this section, and its inspiring to hear of all the dog lovers and the wonderful stories that they bring. my wife and i are going to look for a new puppy, they just add so much joy to our lives. so even in this time of pain and mourning, the thought of a new friend really seems to help. i will keep you posted with pictures of the new critter. we are thinking of another weimaraner, a rhodesian ridgeback, or a german short hair pointer. notice the theme of short hair dogs, it gets HOT down here in the summer!
That's Wowzers for Bowzers! You are awesome! Most people have a waiting period before looking for another dog (or cat). You are doing the right thing, as there are SO many pup's out there that need a good home with the love and attention that you will give. Hats off to you for putting the tears aside! It's hard, but the joy that a new best friend will give you will help in the healing process of yesterday's loss. Your new puppy will never take the place of the memories you had, but will augment the joy that a dog can bring you. Please post a pic of your new best friend when it finds you!
