Hello guys.. I am new to the forum. I am 30 and totally fascinated with these cars since I was a little kid and I would see them in magazines and TV. I was born in a VERY poor country and raised with the bare essentials, no luxuries at all. I feel blessed to be able to finally get one of these cars but my background and insecurities are killing me. DO I really need this car? Can I really afford it? I am not rich by any means. I have low debt and I am married with no kids. I have 1 million saved and a good job where really my salary depends on the time and effort I put on it. Just thinking about buying a 360 ( if the 360 then id get the cab ) or a 430 makes me feel an amazing sense of achievement but at the same time, makes me feel like a pretentious little bastard. It is a very strange feeling I am sure many here felt.
I am in similar position like you, i am not rich person. To buy this car means some spending i realy feel. However i say always to myself "Damn life is only one and too short" and after i die, who the hell will spend that money laying somewhere and making me feel good i did not make this stupid decision? I think its not neccessary to be super rich guy to buy Ferrari, its just good to be always on safe side to have basic funds secured. Its not best idea to own Ferrari and live in canvas, drink water, eat bread just because you had to do belt service this month. Important fact is also why you want this car. For me is main part of my life and biggest hobby. Its not only driving,i like to work on the car, etc...I know people spending much more for hobbies which make even less sense for someone....... BTW after you make first ride, you will forget about any bad feeling......
If you have a million saved that is OK. I would buy a house first, then a ferrari. When I bought my first porsche I though that was a lot of money. Then when I bought a ferrari I had 100,000 euro budget which I thought was an insane amount of money for a car. Now I have spend it I would look at spending even more. As long as you have secured your position for the essentials in life, do not feel guilty. It is your money and you have earned it so do not feel guilty spending it.
My answer if you are from Nigeria: But it begs the question, why not pay off your low debt with your million savings? Are you based in Nigeria? Do you want to transfer your million to me so that the Nigerian government doesn't steal your investment? Yes, I would be happy to do that for you, I even don't mind paying you some money upfront if you like, shall we say £50,000? My answer if you are NOT from Nigeria: I agree with FMax and Masar, buy what you want and don't feel guilty about spending money you've worked hard for.
Shouldn't I have addressed my original reply to "Dear Friend"? This is some great reading if you're into scamming the scammers!
Actually, it seems y'all are jumping on someone for no reason I can see. IP is out of Miami. I know lots of people who have saving but still carry some low amounts of debt depending on the class of the asset (think real estate). Not to say he isn't a scammer, but not a nice way to start out with a new guy. Hell, I felt guilty buying a 328 -- there's a certain Southern Baptist "say no to fun!" thing you have to overcome sometimes I can see how spending 80-250K on a car can be traumatic to someone who has scrambled out of poverty.
Seen that one before. I laughed so hard I nearly died first time I read it. Not the same Derek Trotter that posts here is it?
The guy is supposed to be this great enthusiast since a kid, he's got $1MM saved up but now he already feels guilty? Oh, and he finally stumbles across F-chat for his first post? Next.
The root to all stress is coveting, so don't covete.lol You might want to consider sponsoring an orphan say one or two a year if your not already doing so, the cost is about $265 per child for education food for the year and I say buy your toy. 360 looks better
you know its bull**** when someone says something so ridiculous that he has no business making any purchases in general.. 30 year old 1m in the bank.. and still has a little debt? oh and he isn't sure if he can afford a ferrari that will cost him 100-150k?? why anyone even responds to these posts is beyond me.
+1 This shouldn't be a game of "I can name that tune in 1 note". Everything I read in the single post seems quite feasible. We tell people they can't afford a Ferrari unless they are liquid, have their obligations under control and if it doesn't represent more than 1-50% of their net worth (ranges all over the place). Asking if $100-200K out of $1M is "affordable" is right in the debatable range. Plus, discussing the "feeling guilty" feeling is perfectly realistic. People with high savings and work ethic often have trouble knowing when it's OK to reward themselves. Yes there are some BS'er's that come on this board and we generally do a good job of ferreting them out sooner or later. In the interest of making this place more social and open, how about we err on the side of later? There is no prize for being the first to call BS!
Aside from a post "riddled" with meanings which are many... [1] About that username...
