Never really got into the hunting thing(only been a few times on private land) but I have been shooting forever. Anyways friends and I want to go white tail hunting and are wondering if there are any public lands that yall would recommend near(within 2-3 hours/preferably west, i like the terrain better) Austin? Can you even hunt white tail on public land with a rifle?

    Thanks,
    Ry

I don't know of any public places, just dear leases. The prices are usually way more than I would want to spend.

I'm assuming you've probably already checked out the Texas Parks & Wildlife website about the public hunting available to you, but if you haven't here is the link to what you'll want to check out:

    http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/hunt/public/

As far as being able to use a rifle while on public lands, I'm pretty sure you can in certain areas (wide open places far from cities and towns) but you'll probably be limited to using a shotgun, bow, or muzzle loader in the majority of the areas. If you want any information on ranches that offer weekend hunting trips pm me, I have several friends that have hunting operations within 3 hours of Austin. Hope this helps you out.

Thats one thing I do not like about Texas. I refuse to pay a grand to hunt a German Shepard size white tail on someone private land. Its cheaper to
go to Colorado, Utah or Wyoming and pay out of state license fees than hunt in Texas. I friend of mine in Texas hunted a ranch in the hill country and shot a beautiful white tail. They charged him $170.00 per point trophy fee... Over a grand!

I am working in PA and there are thousands of acres of public land a few miles from my house and I have been hunting every day for the last two weeks.. The only problem is 18 degrees and snow is rough for this Texas boy!

What kind of activity are you seeing out there on the public land?

Opening day I skipped, too many people. During the week I am pretty much by myself, I skipped a few buck hoping for larger.
Season ends Saturday so I am going out tomorrow and Saturday all day.

you need to make friends with someone who owns a ranch. I have several friends that own land, several that have leases, and family that have ranches. I guess I consider myself lucky enough to never have paid for any sort of hunt and have several options at my disposal.

...dig the Gonzales Flag btw :)

Thanks for the props :)... I do have a few friends who have leases but its just a pain sometimes to get our schedules on the same page. Guess I am just going to have to buy my own place lol...

    Rob,

    I wish I were rich too. :)

I used the term "our" loosley. It is company owned.

BTW, what races are we doing an FCHAT gathering at in 2009. Since F1 is gone in North America, what are we going to watch? ALMS maybe? I am up for going to a race somewhere.

Here's a group my Sgt ran into in Bandera. You meet at a location and then head to the ranch. You don't only hunt at one place, it's a group of ranches. Prices aren't too bad either. I'll be going there next deer season.

I have my deer stand 70 yds from my front door...shot a 185 pound 13 point white tail there last year. I hunt dove off my porch, catfish from my pond, and at least every other year, I get a shot or two at ducks at the pond. That's what I love about Texas. I am almost finishing off my venison from 2007.

I have never even seen a 13 point live and in the wild! We have a few nice 8 points here in the neighborhood, but the neighbors get pissed when I shoot their deer! LOL!
