I know this is really simple but every time i try to do this and then paste it in MS paint, it never works.

Basically i have the "print Screen" key but it is on the same key as the insert, button. (do i have to put the num lock key on?) I know that i hit control and "prt sc", so what am i doing wrong?

You got PrntSc right, just go to paint, and hit ctrl+v or right click and hit paste. :) and You don't have the hit Ctrl when you hit PrtSc but it still works. I just tested it out on this page.
My PrtSc button is on the same as SysRq, but since it's my laptop I have to hit Fn for those.

Here are the steps I do:
    1. Resize the window for what I want a screen snapshot of.
    2. Open up Windows Photo Editor in a different window.
    3. Click on the top edge of the target window to get it to be the active window (that is, in focus).
    4. While holding down the ALT key, click the PrintScrn key once.
    5. Click on the top edge of the Windows Photo Editor window.
    6. Do the drop-down menu options "Edit" followed by "Paste as New Image".
    7. Crop the results to what I want and then save as a new jpg file name.

You may have to locate Windows Photo Editor on your PC or download it from MS. Almost any image editor will do, but I tend to use Windows Photo Editor for screen snapshots.

    Hope this helps you.

Here are a few pics of the end results.
The first pic is your original post cropped to just the post content part (the rest of the fchat window cut out).
Second pic is the first pic inside Windows Photo Editor.

Really? You had to hit FN for it? Hows the button layout, is it PrtSc on top and the other one? Or the other way around?

It is Insert and then prnt sc below that in a little rectangular box. Button is in top right corner.

Oh that's why. It's different for every laptop. Mines on top so I don't have to push Fn. :D At least you figured it out.

Anything so basic should not require the reading of a manual. There is something lacking in the design if a keyboard cannot be figured out. It should be absolutely intuitive. You press a key to get that character on the screen, or that function to be performed by the software (on/off, volume up, down, cursor movement, function, etc.). So why should the PrtScrn key be different? I hate the Fn+_ key combinations and I hate the differences between keyboards across models and across countries...why is the currency symbol in a different place on european keyboards? Grrrrrrrrrr.

My "new" laptop has the Euro and the $ sign right next to my arrow keys, it's really stupid, I guess the needed a filler, so threw those there. I have never used it with the year and a couple months I've had it.
