I have found some programs that charge a small fee per month, but if there is something for free.............I'm all for it.

I use Logmein. It does have a fee but you can connect to your host computer from anywhere, transfer files, and even print from the host computer on your home computer and printer. The really neat thing is being able to drag files from one screen to the other.

I am able to access my computer desktop at work anywhere there is an internet connection and it's built into Windows so it's free.
It's called Remote Desktop and it's great.

You will need to set up port forwarding and open the relevant ports on your firewall. After that, remote desktop works fine for running programs remotely. As do any number of other programs. Google how to set up remote desktop and also freeware remote control software.

opening up remote desktop from your work pc to the entire Internet? Not in my company's security policy (I'm the owner), we use VPN gear on top of the remote desktop. Your risk threshold may vary. Do you keep your work PC always up to date with every security update when immediately available, do you follow all security best practices? Do you need your work desktop for work, or can survive if it was corrupted for a week or compromised. Would you park an Fcar on the wrong side of the tracks every day?

Easiest option is to only allow remote access from your home IP address, but those change every now and then and need to be updated. If you care, probably take a local tech to step you through how to do it more securely.
