Sunglasses

Not sure if this is the right section for this - but who has a particular type or brand of sunglasses you prefer for any particular reason - and why?

I have always preferred Oakley. I like the wrap around models. Started with the Blades a zillion years ago and now have all M frames...

I have been alternating between a couple pairs of Porsche designs as of late.

 

3rd pair of the titanium Maui Jims. No hinges! - Super light weight and stay on top of the head when "pushed" up.

It doesn't bother me, but you do need both hands to put 'em on (To "spread" the arms out) - You can't "flick" out the arms and slide in (!)

Ray Bans!

 

Amen. They are proof of excellent quality. Solid built, works great in heavy sunlight without being too dark and always classic designs that fits most clothes and styles.

 

I bought another pair of Maui Jims yesterday. Ive been wearing them for years. They are great.

 

Serengetis. I love mine in all ways, fit, function, price, and you can get them at Academy sporting goods for about $100. I am also a fan of Ray
Ban Balorama's, just because I wore them 30 years ago.... If you are a shooter, Zeiss or Randolph Engineering.

 

I have had a lot of different Ray Ban's over the last decade. Had Prada glasses for a year, they have been great and the lenses have held up a lot better than the Ray Bans.

 

Oliver Peoples for me. Glasses look similar to the pair that Enzo Ferrari wore.

I love them as well, their lenses are second to none.

 

Interesting to hear the responses. For me it's got to be Serengeti.
I used to wear contact lenses and my eyes are very sensitive to bright light.
When I first got out of college I had bought a pair of Porsche Designs - I liked the ability to change lenses.
They lasted a few years, but were lost one day.
I replaced them with a pair of the original Serengeti Drivers.
Since then nothing else will do.
Fast forward to about three years ago.
I had stopped wearing my contacts as I was no longer able to tolerate wearing them all day so I went back to glasses.
I decided that I needed a pair of prescription sunglasses and of course, wanted Serengetis.
At first I thought, "I've got four pair of frames from over the years - I'll just get a set of prescription lenses made for one of those frames."
WRONG!
Although Serengeti makes an outstanding product, they can be just a tad difficult to deal with.
You don't just go to your local eye care place and have a pair made.
Serengeti has a patent on the materials and process to make their lenses - which are truly superior to all others - so you have to go directly through them and they send you to a company called Athletic Optics. Supposedly that's the ONLY way to get prescription Serengeti lenses made.
After extensive searching, I found another company called Optics Planet that was also authorized for prescription Serengeti lenses. Their prices were better than Athletic Optics. Never did call Serengeti back and ask them why they didn't tell me about Optics Planet.
What really happens is that your order gets routed to a lab that was, I believe, in Iowa.
I had to order them over the internet and pray that they came back right.
If they were not right, fixing it would likely be a nightmare.

Well - eventually I got them and I absolutely love them. I never ever go anywhere without them - they are my American Express card!

I won't bore you with the story of when I needed to replace my normal glasses and decided I wanted the same Serengeti Aviator frame for my normal glasses. That was quite another ordeal.

Now I'm considering a pair of polarized prescription lenses but have not taken that leap yet.

Oakley or Maui Jim, FTW.

 

I have worn Porsche Design since 1990. I believe I still have the second pair I ever bought in a drawer somewhere. It is nice that PD will support and repair their out-of-production glasses. I go for the frames with interchangeable lenses. I occasionally switch off with Maui Jim - really like the lightness of the titaniums, but the polarization plays havoc with the HVAC/Radio readouts of BMWs.

I tried a year of Oakleys back in the Nineties, when I was working in the desert and doing a lot of jetskiing on the weekends. It appeared that UV made the frames brittle and I had two pairs that just snapped in half after about six months of use. I am sure they have since fixed that issue but after the second purchase breaking, I never bought another pair.

Currently, I am liking the look/design of Persol.

 

I've always gravitated to whatever fits my face, looks good on me and doesn't feels like it's going to break. I've never really been partial to one brand or another, but lately, Persol and Robert Marc have been topping my list.

 

When I am climbing I like my Natives because they stay on even if I take a whipper. Oh yea, they have a lifetime warranty too so if I break them they replace them.

I have had a pair of Maui Jim's for the car. The first thing I noticed was how clear they were compared to all the others I have had. They are optically the best I have tried and comfortable too. Overall they have been great glasses.

 

Another vote for Natives--great all around sunglasses. I use Rudy Project for mountain biking.

Have been looking at Maui Jims--probably my next casual wear purchase.

Let's take this one little step further.

What do you consider the most important consideration when shopping for sunglasses?
Do you buy the pair that looks the coolest?
Are you loyal to a particular brand? If so, why?
Do you buy them for their ability to block out glare from the sun and to protect your eyes from the bright light and the potentially harmful effects of that bright sunlight?
Is price your most important consideration?
Anything else I've left out...?

Me? Since my eyes are extremely sensitive to bright light, my most important factor is the lens's ability to protect my eyes.
If you do your research you'll find out who makes the best quality lenses.
Having bought that brand, I love everything about them and will likely never purchase anything else.

Anyone else have the prescription thing thrown in the mix to complicate matters?

Maui Jims polarized lenses seem to cut the most glare which is why I chose them first. They are great driving. With them I realized I didn't need the dark lenses just good ones that cut out everything that hurts the eyes. I like their bronze lenses. They make Grey, Bronze, and Rose. Then they are one of the only brands that have small enough frames to look normal on me.

You can fax them your prescription and they will make their lenses in your prescription.

 

Looks like im in good company here.
I have a pair of Serengeti Prato driver glasses for flying because Polarized lenses really F#%! up LCD screens I love them had them for 6 years and they are the longest lasting non scratched lenses I have.
I also have a pair of Ray ban Aviators and Another pair of Ray ban P's they are my "style" glasses I like em plenty but just not good for much but driving.
I also have a pair of Maui Jim MJ sports And man do I love those sun glasses they are great for golfing because they are so light weight and they stay on, Also they do cut alot of glare but dont try and wear them when trying to read an LCD because they make the whole screen black. (also MJ is really good about their 2 yr warrenty, just pay shipping and your glases are fixed)

If I had to pick one it would have to be he serengeti's with the MJ's in a close second. Im very picky about my sunglasses.


(and i just realized all of my sunglasses are the bronze/henna colored lenses)

Major things I look for in glasses are:

Quality - this is build and ability to protect my eyes. Most major brands are at least competitive on this front

Style - they have to fit my face and look good

Fit - they need to be comfortable and stay on if I am doing something active. That is why I use different glasses for sports than I do for casual.


Brand loyalty and cost are low on the list. Brand gets some weight in that "If I like my last pair" they will get another chance. If I hated the last pair, I probably will not look there unless I exhaust other options. Cost gets little consideration, if the glasses are all of the 3 major items I will get them, otherwise I will pass.
