    Hi,

I understand, but please correct me if wrong, that the 360 (and 430?) C-cars came with a MM940 display and a MicroDas (?) logger.

Was there "anything" similar in the 355 C-cars? If yes, what is it?

    TIA,
    Cheers,
    Ian

The 360 challenge was the first challenge car offered with a factory installed acquisition system and was the Magnetti marelli.

The 355 never had it and any that were installed were by the owners. Most used a PI system just for ease of use and availability.

    Best regards, Jim

    Thankyou!

I was looking for something else, and came across a "package" that upgrades the "default" logger/display to, lets say, 21st century specs - It simply plugs in to what's already there and the CAN line and adds a bunch (bigger $ = bigger bunch) of new capabilities.

Obviously, I now know that it'll only work with 430's, and even then the prerequisites are pretty extensive:

I would post the link, but don't want to get in trouble with the cops - It wasn't easy to to find as the company making it is in Australia. I have no idea if anyone else does such a thing.

Whatever, it's not going to work in my buddy's 355 C-car.

    Cheers,
    Ian

The part numbers you list are for 360 Challenge. 430 Challenge uses new generation of MM hardware, but software is still very bad. Porsche 997 GT3 Cup cars use Motec loggers and infinitely better software.

    Hey,

I was just about to jump down your virtual throat with a "duh" :D

But, fortunately, I re-read my initial answer:

What I meant was 360's of course. Sorry for the confusion!

    Cheers,
    Ian

My car used a Pi System, I've never used it. Far superior systems now for $1,000. I heard 10 years ago they were something like $8k?

The ECU for the Marelli system in the 430CH is 11K (!). I found this out because mine failed... which it turns out they do because it has a watch battery in it that runs out of juice, the replacement of course costs 3$ but you need to crack the ECU open to replace it - that fix ended up being a couple hundred $ rather than 11K.

The 430 system is pretty good, but not as good as the Motec system in the Porsche. The main missing thing is a proper brake sensor, you have a brake switch so you can see on or off, but not pressure - so its difficult to see if you are braking correctly - obviously with ABS, its less of an issue than in the Porsche with no ABS, but the ABS on the 430 is worth avoiding since it increases your braking distances and you can trigger it in a bumpy braking zone if your initial brake pressure is too high, then you have to get pretty far out of the brakes to get out of the ABS.

    +1

Obviously, you can insert a pressure sensor in the line and capture from that [Assuming you've got a spare channel of course] However, the "thing" I mentioned above captures (among many others):

    ABS error
    ABS activity
    ASR status

At least you'd be able to see when the ABS/ASR was active. [I have no idea what ABS error means, but it sounds a little scaey :) ]

    Cheers,
    Ian

I'm pretty sure posting the link would be a service to the community esp as its not you selling it. I'd certainly be interested.

The "ECU" is less than half of that if you buy one from a proper Marelli Motorsport dealer. It is in fact an engine control unit called the SRAE which incorporates a data logger and also runs the DDU display unit. We do a conversion kt that "unlocks" the original table and includes a lot more information that is available over the CAN bus (well over 100 channels in total). It also adds suspension position, brake pressure, crankcase pressure and gear box temp.

I'd post links but I'd get in trouble for that!

We've used this system in Australia on the GT Championship winning car. It is very easy to use and I especially like the ethernet download which makes it very easy to manage multiple car downloads.

Doesn't surprise me - I looked into how much a motec would cost and one could pretty much replace data aq and 2x engine ecus for the same money. However if one wants to run FC then one has to eat a certain amount of parts BS.

So, I've got to ask; Is this thing any good? [Please note, I'm not trying to pimp it, I'm genuinely interested - Especially as any standard "replacement" sounds *awfully* expensive.....]

Or, do you guys simply install a new system? Mind me asking what?

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Hi Ian,

On that Aussie website I see a photo of the car that I think Pitcrew here worked on. So he may have experience with that system.

ps: You could also try FerrariFixer as he was also involved with the car. He is banned here but I think you can still send an email to him. He rubbed a few people the wrong way in the Aussie section, but might be able to help.

Or you could ask me. I designed and built them.
