Months and months ago, Eugenio (southern California, independent Ferrari service) called to ask about the availability of an SD3 diagnostic computer. These machines are outrageously expensive, but Eugenio knew that as F430's, 575M, 599's, Scuds, and 612's roll through his facility, he'll need the proper tools for service. Anyway, I told him if the prices ever drop to level we could both stomach, I'd ring him immediately.

Fast forward to 30 days ago. As the US dollar gained unexpected strength against the Euro, my currency adviser at Tempus Consulting (http://www.tempusconsulting.com/) suggested I had a window of opportunity for any big Euro or GBP transactions I might have been considering. Well, in the same 48 hour span, my buddy with the F1 pit crew jacket (posted earlier) called to ask if I needed a few SD3's. I said "Yes! I'll take 3". Gulp

I quickly called "E" and asked him if he was still in the game for an SD3, because we had a narrow window of opportunity. As a shop owner who knows where the service game is headed, he naturally opted-in. Without an SD3, he'd never be able to totally and completely service F430's, 575M, 599's, Scuds, and 612's. With an SD3, he's in the catbird seat. Customers would have complete confidence in his diagnostic tools. Heck, he would have the same tool as the dealers -- with the latest and most recent software too! (Why not buy an ST05 or some other 'cheap' diagnostic computer? Ask "E" about the differences, and the value-proposition of using a real SD3.)

Last Friday I had the machine in my hands in North Carolina for a quick QC review, and this morning FedEx brought Eugenio his amazing stocking stuffer!

What else can I say? This is the future of independent tech service... and "E" is perfectly situated to serve Southern California from the OC all the way to Valley.

p.s. That metal thing on top of the Ricambi shipping box is also a supposedly 'unobtainable' and unlisted 360 frame piece. Hah!

Yes, it operates in English and Italian. To be honest, like most Ferrari documentation, the Italian mode is far more detailed an accurate. "E" speaks fluent Italian, so I expect he'll just leave it in that mode.

I have a friend of a friend that can get these wholesale from Hong Kong, $29.99 each! He'll even throw in a good deal on a Rolex or a Patek. Just trying to help! :)

Yes, but is it on timer? Most of the non-dealer SD3's are locked so that after "x" amount of days you have to buy a renewall licence. If it's not been bought legitimately then you can't upgrade the software or recommision them. On the main page after start-up you should see "days left XXXXX" on the very bottom in a blue block.I paid 22,000 euro's for mine and it has the full package including Maserati up to Granturismo. Some that are on the market have had the timer function de-commisioned, and considering the amount of problems the SD3 has with it's software and it's in-built ability to crash and die for no apparent reason, i'd recommend some serious research before buying. Also, what's wrong with the ST-05 unit? I have one of these also, and it's far quicker and easier to use for most applications than the SD3. Alright, you can't do things like resetting 612 service intervals, but overall it's a VERY capable little unit, i've had no problems with mine. Try getting some aftersales support with the SD3, it just won't happen.....

Yeah, but those counterfeit ones are called "DS3" and actually have a cheap quartz movement inside. ;)

This is true, my supplier from DMS Automotive told me he has a few diagnostic systems for BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari and he said he pays dearly to subscribe to the software updates.

Question: I was told that the ST05 does not read out the OBDII side in generic Pxxxx codes. Is this correct?

Yeah... I guess they did some donuts or drag racing last night. Hahahaha....

The clutch wear is from a F430 that arrived for service (I don't know how old the car is). Yesterday's picture was from a 360. I just meant to illustrate that the device has already been successfully used on two customer cars within the first day of ownership.
