The average asking price on AutoTrader right now for a two-wheel drive, manual '95-'98 Porsche 911 coupe -- i.e., the most basic 993 -- is $40.4k. Meanwhile, the average price for a 964 coupe is $31k, and the average for a '99 996 coupe is $27k. I realize all of the perceived advantages the 993 has over those cars, but I can't imagine that it's running a fifty percent price premium over first-year 996s and a similar premium over its predecessor, as good as it is.

Does anyone have any recent experience with the 993 market? Does anyone know if people are actually getting $40k for 993 C2 coupes, or if these are just inflated asking prices? Is the 993 really recession-proof?

I don't know what recession proof is, however, here in Japan, air cooled 993s are very popular still to the diehards and their prices reflect the demand. w/ smiles Jimmy

Pretty much. As the last and best of the "real" (read air cooled) Porsches this will always be for many the 911 to have drivable/money wise.
Deserved or not thats the way it is. There are 996 Turbos out there at $40k.
I'm waiting for "my" 996 GT2 to get to $60k. Some at $75k now for a nice high mile car. High miles for a GT2= 25k !?!? Amazing. $20k more for one over a 993 = no brainer. Saw a 996 GT3 go for $50k. Depreciation is my friend.

I agree. I sold mine a few years back, but the values on these are done settling. I saw two yesterday when I was out and they still look right. At $40K, that's less than Boxster money for the last beautifully made Porsche.

Unless you put 100K miles on it, values should hold up nicely, IMO.

I was cross-shopping M3's with 993 C4S's (preferably without the aero-kit) and I just couldn't bring myself to pay that kind of money for an out-of-warranty aircooled, regardless of how gorgeous they are. One day, however...

I just sold my 1996 993 C4S in November, 34K miles, factory aero kit, and PSS9 suspension (not shown in photos) for $52K. I bought it four years ago with 11K miles for $50K. I can't think of a better daily driver with investment/not lose your A** on a car kind of potential.

I wonder at how people consider it the last "real" one because its aircooled, when its the first 911 to get a new roof panel since the original 911. It got manydrastic changes over he 964 generation, which is the final evolution of the 911, the 993 was close to a brand new animal and not as traditional. It brought in the 996 to come as it already stepped away from what had been basic 911 architecture for many years. Maybe someone can say it was the last "real" porsche, maybe, but it sure isn't the last real "911".

Interesting. I came to the opposite conclusion a few years ago. I had an M3 cabrio, new (with paddleshift) that I started driving in 2004. When the lease came up, I considered alternatives, and decided to go with a 96 C4 cabrio. Not as fast as the M3, certainly not as sophisticated. But, far more involving to drive. Unlike the M3, where you sit upright in something that does not really feel like a sportscar, but instead, a sports "coupe," the Porsche is far more involving to drive. The steering wheel set up takes some getting used to-- it feels horizontal and too close to the dashboard at first, but you adjust to it-- and the car just seems so much smaller.
I sunk some money into the P-car; changed and updated the suspension, lowered the car, installed more modern wheels, had some minor mechanical work done, along with some cosmetics, including a new convertible top.
The 993 is a joy to drive. It is not the beast that my GT2 was (996), but in many ways, it is a far more enjoyable car to have for the street. And, a keeper.

Car looks great Bill...I see Rick at Deman quite often and he always speaks fondly of your 993. Glad to went with it when we discussed the change from the M3 back in the day.

I have to add splitters to the front of mine as well...looks great.

Beautiful Porsche. Is that a Turbo S? Hard to see an inlet on the rear fender and it has red (instead of yellow) calipers. Rest looks like Turbo S (front brake cooling ducts/lights, spoiler, etc).

I would love to have a black 993TT and a 996GT2. I can't even fit one in my current budget. :(
