Most any Billie Holiday songs would rank high on my list. I trust the spirit of your thread tosses any artist after 1970. Yes? No? (i.e.: Artists that hit their hayday PRIOR TO 1970).

Wiki - Crooner is an epithet given to a male singer of a certain style of popular songs, dubbed pop standards. A crooner is a singer of popular ballads and thus a "balladeer".

Bing Crosby was the king of crooning. He may have invented the format.

"While both male and female singers sang in this style, the term "crooner" is rarely, and improperly, used to describe a female singer"

    Frank is the man.

Never having heard the word "crooner" before, I hope that my suggestion is not a complete miss:

I like Dean Martin, Tom Jones and Tony Bennett. I know I'm probably the only guy on earth to feel this way, but I always felt Sinatra was overrated.
