There should only be five nines, not six. But either way, I hope you took a picture. Also, when spotting a 99999 F50, it behooves the spotter to attempt to photograph additional identifying details - like the assembly and engine numbers for instance.

There's no specific reason why the serial number is 99999 - it's just the last five-digit serial number, and F50s happened to be in production at the time. Why Ferrari decided to use that one a multitude of times could be as symbolic as it could be random. What color was the one you saw...?

Is that really true? Isn't s/n 103097 the first F50? That would come quite a bit after s/n 99999, of course.

95592 and 98170 are F50s built way before 99999. And then there were 9 further F50s after 99999 and before 103097.

Good to hear from you Joe!

It was at Supercar Sunday, a meet off the 101 freeway that Jay Leno often visits. While the car was parked, a mechanic from the Auto Gallery was working on the car, installing small parts near the engine bay.The engine was not in the best of shape but it wasn't in bad shape either. I also heard that it had around 600 miles on it.

LOL. It wont have low-mileage for long! Without any exaggeration I can tell you that it is not uncommon for the owner to take one of the Supercars from California and end up on the East Coast. He cares little for perfect detail or cleanliness. I believe he said he purchased it at the Maranello Auction (Im not sure which year) and it was previously owned by Garage Francorchamps.

Nice picture, thanks! I believe the original owner wanted and was given the last Ferrari 5 digit serial number. Interesting choice to hang it on...

The story goes that Swaters had personally requested the number years earlier from Enzo, who had consented. Other s/n 99999 chassis were made by Ferrari, most likely to hide the fact that they had built more than 349 F50s. A few weeks ago we discussed this in an F50 thread and someone postulated that as many as six 99999s may exist...

Perhaps their identities can be individually distinguished by assembly numbers or other means and set forth for clarification.

Sheehan's article touches on this but doesn't conclude...

LOL, yes, I saw that, but why does that confuse you...? Cars imported into the US and converted receive a tag like that. I've seen a few others like that.

Any idea what the serial number was for the third F50 built. It was delivered as a USA market car to an American customer in Washington.

As mentioned earlier the 3rd F50 built was #99999. See my post #8 of 24th December 2008.
The car YOU asked about HERE is #103139 which was sold October 12, 1995, to Andy Evans of Redmond/WA, registered on Italian Tourist license plates
"EE 273 BA" (EE=Escursionisti Esteri). Although 103139 is numbered as 003/349 it is NOT the 3rd F50 built.
