Michigan does not have Ad Valorem, their equivalent is the registration fee weight category. From what I can tell, it appears to be more expensive to register a car in Michigan. For Comparison, when I registered my 348 Spider in MI it was right around $500 a year. In Forsyth County, my ad valorem will be about $392.91.

I'm not aware of a link for the SoS that will calculate your registration fees, however, I think if you call a branch office and give a vin number or y/m/m they can look it up and tell you what the fee weight category is for a 2003 575.

    Good luck!

vehicles MY prior to 1983 are based on weight. after, they are based on msrp. the two states have different depreciation rates based on MY's. i called the SoS. my 575 would run about $800 in MI. i haven't checked GA but it would i thought it would run much more.

What do you mean the floor is set higher than it is in GA? The Fee weight I was speaking of is based on original MSRP, which is a really bad system. The more expensive the vehicle was brand new, the more you pay to register your vehicle (which is similar to how the Ad Velorem taxes work, but as near as I can tell, the AV taxes continue to decrease based on the vehicle's assessed value. As the vehicle depreciates, the less AV you will pay. This is only true to a point in Michigan. They only reduce the level on your vehicle's fee, it's either 3 or 4 times. Once you get to that level, your registration basically won't decrease until your vehicle is old enough where you can register it as a classic. But until then, you're stuck paying a registration fee based on how much the vehicle was brand new.

I'm stil perplexed by the floor is set higher....what do you mean?

the "floor" i mentioned is basically what you outlined by saying "once you get to that level".....

it looks like MI stops the depreciation at some point. i haven't finished checking, but i believe it is cheaper to register a the same new vehicle in MI than it would be in GA.

MI SOS (over the phone ) told me a 2003 575 would run around $800. my 2007 tahoe is $200.

From the MI SOS website :

    "About Your Vehicle Registration

For model years 1984 and newer, the vehicle registration is based on the manufacturer's suggested retail (or base) price (ad valorem). Registrations for models 1983 or older are based on the vehicle's weight."

i wonder if i would be able to move the plate over from my 1978 corvette (which is like $20) and get another plate for it.

Michigan registration is pretty standard in the state, meaning, it would cost the same to register vehicle A in Detroit as it would be to register that same vehicle in Houghton.

Technically, I think it was $20 to register my Ferrari in Georgia and just shy of $500 to register that same exact vehicle in Michigan.

Considering the Ad Velorem taxes are going to vary by county, in Forsyth County, they will be less than $400 for me in April. Considering I had to pay like $20 for an emissions test, $20 for registration, and I won't be paying AV until April, the total of less than $440 is still less than nearly $500. It may be cheaper to register a brand new car in Michigan than compared to Georgia (registration $20 + AV Taxes) for the first, maybe the second year, but I would guess that a comparison of that same brand new vehicle over a 10 year period, you'll pay way more in Michigan over that time frame.

the GA DMV website has the ability to calculate advalorem on it. a 2003 575 runs $1,600 in cobb county vs $800 in michigan

Wow, I just checked for your 575M the AV for Forsyth county (I don't know where you live just comparing to what I already know about my spider) would be over $1,100, and likewise, the Tahoe would be $253.89. I'm surprised. Insurance will be higher! LOL :)

My motorcycle policy in Georgia is a pittance compared to what my Michigan Policy was. My auto policies both dropped (Ferrari is on a separate policy). Even factoring in Emissions testing, my registration dropped for all of my cars.

    Good luck!

I wasn't sure what county you were in.

Just be glad you don't own an Enzo in Kennesaw, that would run you $13,245.38!

    :)

i take that back. my 2007 is $216 and my 1998 expy is $123 in MI (in 2007). the expy would be $55 in GA. so, it looks like the initial yearly costs are lower in MI but they drop much quicker in GA unlike MI where they bottom out (hit a floor).

Yes you can do this, that's what I do. I have a couple of older vehicles that aren't worth squat. When license plates are due I'd get plates for all our vehicles except the Ferrari - I'd let that one expire. Then a few days later I'd go into the Sec. of State Office and transfer one our "beater" car plates to the Ferrari. Then a few days after that I'd go and buy a new plate for the "beater". In Mich. you can even transfer pickup truck plates to cars. This system of juggling plates around is absolutely legal but frowned upon. The ladies at our local Sec. of State Office always knew what I was up to and when they saw the price of the Ferrari plate - they didn't blame me a bit for doing it that way.

Sort of keep this method on the down low.....if too many people start doing it, they will change the laws to prevent it :)
