Police: Pa. man shot for making noise during movie

PHILADELPHIA – A man enraged by a noisy family sitting near him in a movie theater on Christmas night shot the father of the family in the arm, police said.

James Joseph Cialella, 29, of Philadelphia, faces six charges that include attempted murder and aggravated assault. He remained in custody Saturday.

Police said Cialella told the man's family to be quiet, then threw popcorn at the man's son. The victim, whom television reports identified as Woffard Lomax, told police that Cialella was walking toward his family when he stood up and was shot.

Detectives called to the United Artists Riverview Stadium theater in South Philadelphia found Cialella carrying the weapon, a .380-caliber handgun, in his waistband, police said.

Lt. Frank Vanore called the incident "scary that it gets to that level of violence from being too noisy during a movie."

Lomax, 31, of Yeadon, was released from a hospital after the shooting. He declined to comment when contacted by phone Saturday.

It was not immediately known whether Cialella had a lawyer or whether bail had been set. A woman who answered a call to his home number Saturday declined to comment.

A theater manager referred calls to Regal Entertainment Group spokesman Dick Westerling, who did not immediately return a phone message Saturday.

Police could not confirm what movie was playing in the theater, but The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that it was "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."

Just saw another crazy shooting story in the paper today.

Chad Blue got shot and couldn't tell police who shot him.

1 month later he heard a local rap artist Rico Todriquez Wright of Dublin, GA...who had cut a CD - "Thug-Life, Hitting Licks for a Livin" rapping about "Chad Blue knows how I shoot!"

Rico just got 20 years in prison.. for his singing LOL

So what's the problem? The perp was within his legal rights to quell a problem, that he thought could be injurious to his own well being.

He spent 7 bucks to enjoy a movie, and a family was disallowing him his legal right by being boisterous. No problem here, it's Tit for Tat!

Wow. Looks the Boondocks was true about rappers never being snitched on, but getting arrested anyways b/c they rap about the shooting.
There are over a 100 other ways he could have asked them to be quiet. Throwing popcorn at his son & shooting the father are not 2 of them. He deserves punishment.

I guess they don't call Phila "The city of brotherly love" anymore.

(Has Frisco taken over that motto? ;))

As someone who takes their movie-watching experience seriously, I have very mixed feelings about this situation. I've had a lot of movies ruined by jerks who think the place is their living room and WILL NOT shut up even when asked.

On the other hand, the shooter didn't even hit center mass. WTF?

    ;) :D

That was exactly why I posted the halfbaked idea on the halfbakery back in 2000 - we'd been to see Director's Cut of The Exorcist and the 8 most irritating mexiskinheads in all of SoCal who sat behind us would.not.shut.up

It's been quite a while since I have gone to a theater to watch a movie (I understand they have sound now). Are things THIS BAD in theaters? Do the 'ushers' not help enforce behaivior of those that are rude and annoying to others? Is it like a classrom of wild indians? Can a patron get a refund if they leave early due to others that are unruly during the movie? Looks like Road Rage has gone to the movies!

    Ushers?

You been to the movies since the 60s?

The only people at a modern megaplex are the ticket sellers, the ticket taker, 2 guys in concessions and the projectionist upstairs. Good luck finding anyone working there over the age of 20. None of them are going to risk having their asses kicked for a $8/hr job.

I'll have to tell my dad to really try and be quiet in the movies now. He talks in movies, slurps his drink, crinkles his popcorn container. I never can shut him up so maybe hearing this will.

I guess I proved I have not been to a movie in a while! +1 on anyone nowadays that would ask somebody to STFU. I had a few similar scenario's like that at restaurants, etc. over that last couple of years that I tried to take care of with no luck. The common thread that ALL of these loud, obnoxious, throw out the F-Word every six second low life trash dirt bag kind of people have is that they are ALL A-Holes who would not think twice about beating the crap out of you, pulling a gun, etc. and spending five years in prison over. I just stay clear of most of them.

The victim would have been within his rights to kill the perp if he'd been carrying too...

No harm, no foul. Can't we just watch the rest of the movie now?

Having to put up with noice is not as bad as having someones foot proped up right next to your head, by the idiot in the row behind. Although pulling out the uzi seems like the logical choice, the more effective way is to politely ask the moron to remove his/ her foot.

Well it looks like his "don't snitch" is working

CNN today- the homicide rate among young black teens went up 40%
(The increases for white male teens, meanwhile, were nearly 17% percent) from 2000 to 2007.

Violent crime over-all has gone down across the USA. But we can't ignore the fact that hidden within the overall good news on crime is very bad news for a segment of the population

The report indicates guns are overwhelmingly the weapon of choice for young black offenders and are now used in nearly 85 percent of all homicides they commit, The victim and perpetrators of gun crimes are getting younger and younger.
